Rambelles Split a Pair of Pitching Duels with Texas A&M-Commerce

COMMERCE, Texas – The Angelo State softball team split a pair of pitcher duels with Texas A&M-Commerce 1-0 and 2-1 in eight innings on Friday night in Commerce.

The Rambelles (30-17, 14-12 LSC) were fueled by another dominating pitching performance from Brandy Marlett. The sophomore started both games against the Lions (34-16, 16-14 LSC) not allowing a run in 12 innings. She struck out a combined 21 batters in the two games and only allowed two hits.  ASU would score two runs off seven hits in the two games.

"It was an old school pitching duel with runs hard to come by," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "Both teams pitched really well. It was exciting to get that first win and would have been nice to get the second. We have to bounce back tomorrow and try to get three out of four."

ASU had a chance to strike early with the bases loaded in game one but was unable to come up with a run.  Runners would be in scoring position in the third and fifth but it wasn't until the sixth that the Rambelles found a run.

Ambra Hill singled up the middle and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Lanie Robinson. Brook Mangold recorded the game winning RBI with a single to left field to plate Hill.

Marlett made it stand by striking out three of the last six batters for her 14th win of the season. She struck out a career high 13 batters in game one while only allowing two hits. It is her fourth game of the season to strike out at least 10 batters.

The Rambelles stuck with what worked in game two starting Marlett again. She continued to dominate throwing five innings of no-hit ball and extend her streak of not allowing a run to 21.1 innings.

Kenedy Urbany gave ASU a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth with a solo home run. She took a pitch to left field for her ninth home run of the season.

Marlett was forced to come out after the fifth inning due to an injury.

Texas A&M-Commerce was able to break-up the no-hitter and tie the game in the sixth to send it to extra innings.

The Rambelles had a chance for the go-ahead run in the seventh and eighth but couldn't get the game-winning run home.

The Lions won the game in the bottom of the eighth on a RBI double. Urbany was credited with the loss in two innings of work.

The two teams will conclude it series with a doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m.
