SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team won the first two games 8-3 and 11-8 of its four game LSC series with Cameron on Friday night at Mayer Field.
The Rambelles improved to 34-19 on the season and 16-14 in the LSC scoring a combined 19 runs on 24 hits. Â The nine runs in game two in the third inning was the most runs ASU has scored in a single inning this season. The Aggies fall to 32-19 and 17-13 in the LSC.
"I thought we did an outstanding job of swinging the bats," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "We have been on a really good roll this week. We had a good day Wednesday hitting the ball and hit the ball well again today. This was a big sweep for us and if we can come out and get two more tomorrow that would be huge. I like the way we are playing right now and look forward to honoring our seniors tomorrow."
The Rambelles found themselves down 1-0 in the third inning of game one after solo home run from the Aggies but would respond in a big way.
Brooke Mangold, Ciara Sheppard and Kenedy Urbany all found their way on to leadoff the third inning to load the bases. Madison Greenwell cleared them with a triple to left center to put ASU up 3-1. Alexis Evans' sacrifice fly to left scored Greenwell. Bailey Wallace doubled to and advanced to third on a throwing error. Becky Wilhelm brought her home with single to right field to push the advantage to 5-0.
Brandy Marlett gave up just her second hit in the fourth but kept the 5-1 lead going into the bottom of the fourth.
Lanie Robinson's leadoff double in the fourth turned into a run after a single to right center by Sheppard. Greenwell added her fourth RBI of the game with a single to right field for a 7-1 lead. She went 3-for-4 during the first game with one run scored. Â
The two teams traded runs in the fifth. Ambra Hill walked and Mangold brought her home with a single to shortstop.
Marlett held the Aggies the rest of the way. The sophomore moved to 16-8 on the season with her 15th complete game of the season. She scattered three runs and five hits while striking out seven.
Game two had a very different feel than game one. Cameron jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. The Aggies recorded four hits in the first inning.
The Rambelles couldn't figure out Emily Wasinger through the first two innings being held hitless. Cameron made it 4-0 with an unearned run in the top of the third.
The tides changed in the bottom of the third. Hill leadoff the inning with a walk and Urbany singled to put two runners on. Two illegal pitches later and Hill scored the first run for ASU. A single by Greenwell put runners at the corners. Urbany was able to walk home after another illegal pitch to make it 2-0.
Bailey Wallace put down a squeeze bunt to score Greenwell and made it to second on a throwing error to keep the inning alive. Wallace received free two bases via illegal pitches to tie the game at four.
Taegan Kirk was safe on another error to bring Robinson to the plate. With two outs, the senior gave ASU a 6-4 lead as she sent a shot to left center for a two run home run. It is Robinson's first home run of the season and the second of her career.
The inning stayed alive as the bases were loaded with Greenwell to the plate. The sophomore answered with a triple that hit the right field fence to clear the bases and increase the lead to 9-4. The nine runs were the most in a single inning this season.
With a lead, Urbany settled down and only allowed one hit over the next three innings.
After a scoreless fourth and fifth, the Rambelles added two in the sixth. Greenwell was the answer once again. She singled to left field with two runners on to set a career high with five RBIs.
Cameron scored four runs in the seventh but Urbany ended the threat. The junior improved to 12-5 on the season scattering eight runs and 10 hits. She struck out three while only walking two.
The Rambelles will play the final two home games of the season starting at 2 p.m. ASU will honor its two seniors prior to the game.
