LAREDO, Texas – Angelo State's Brandy Marlett threw her second career no-hitter and ninth in program history to held the Rambelles sweep Texas A&M International 9-0 in six innings and 6-5 in eight innings on Wednesday in Laredo.
The Rambelles improve to 27-16 overall with the sweep and take the season series 4-0 over the Dustdevils 19-27. ASU improved to 5-8 in one run games and 3-2 in extra innings games. It is the fifth run-rule victory of the season and the first since beating Eastern New Mexico 11-1 on March 4.
"Well in game one, Brandy Marlett was huge for us," Angelo State head softball coach Brandy Marlett said. "She was spot on with all fly balls. There was one liner that Brooke Mangold made a nice diving catch but the rest were easy fly balls. We did a lot of good things and we were able to run-rule somebody for the first time in a while. Kenedy had a big day and it nice to see the tweak in her stance and swing pay off. Becky Wilhelm's bomb in the second inning really got us going and Lanie Robinson continued to swing the bat really well especially the sacrifice fly to win game two."
Brandy Marlett was the story of game one no-hitting Texas A&M International. It is the sophomore's second career no-hitter and the ninth in ASU history. She joins former Rambelle Claudia Lopez as the only ASU pitchers to throw two individual no-hitters in a career. Marlett struck out four batters in the game and walked four. She didn't allow a ground ball all game.
The Rambelles offense recorded its second run-rule game of the season. Becky Wilhelm started the scoring off with a solo home run in the top of the second. It is the freshman's third home run of the season. Ciara Sheppard hut a ball down the left field line that turned into a two –RBI double to plate Lanie Robinson and Taegan Kirk for a 3-0 advantage.
After a leadoff double in the fourth, Robinson scored on a sacrifice fly form Kirk to make it 4-0. Urbany added a solo home run in the fifth to push the lead to 5-0. It is the junior's seventh home run of the season.
The Rambelles pushed the score to nine in the sixth. Wilhelm, Robinson and Kirk hit three consecutive singles to load the bases. The trio went 6-for-7 in the game and scored a combined seven runs. Sheppard added a third RBI getting hit by a pitch and Katyln Herzog hit a deep fly ball for a RBI sacrifice fly. Urbany single to left field to bring in the final two runs of the game. The junior went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one runs scored.
Marlett closed the door in the sixth for the run-rule and no-hitter with three fly balls.
The second game turned into an extra inning affair after Texas A&M International tied the game in the sixth inning.
The international tie-breaker rule was in place starting in the inning which places a runner on second base. Robinson hit a deep ball to left field to score Urbany from third on a sacrifice fly for the game-winning run.
Marlett, who came in relief in the third inning, made it stick. With one out and a runner at third, she forced a fielder's choice to get the runner at the plate to keep the one run lead. Texas A&M International had runners at second and third and Marlett induced a grounder that Sheppard was able to throw out for the final out. Â
"Being able to hang on and win a one run game is something we have struggled with," Scott said. "Give credit to Texas A&M International because they did a lot of things well in game two. Ciara made some really nice plays. It was good to get a sweep and get that much closer to a regional bid."
Marlett improved to 12-7 and has won her last five appearances. She threw 5.2 innings in game two and allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits. She also struck out five batters.
ASU was down 2-0 early in game two before answering in the fourth. An error on a fielder's choice allowed Marlett to score from third for the first run of the game. A dropped fly ball scored Madison Greenwell and Brooke Mangold to give ASU a 3-2 lead. Urbany made it 4-2 with a double to left center.
Greenwell led the top of the fifth off with a triple to center field. Alexis Evans was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make the score 5-2.
The Dustdevils added an unearned run in the fifth and scored the game tying runs in the bottom of the sixth.
The Rambelles will return home to Mayer Field to host UTPB for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 12 at 4:30 p.m.
