SAN ANGELO – The No. 8 Angelo State volleyball kicked of its Lone Star Conference schedule with a sweep of Texas Woman's (25-12, 25-16, 25-18) on Friday night in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
The Belles improved to 10-1 overall and 1-0 in the LSC. The ASU offensive attack recorded a .310 clip for the night, while limiting the Pioneer offense to a .056 attack percentage. Angelo State also turned in an excellent performance from the service line against the Pioneers firing a season high 10 team aces. Â With the loss Texas Woman's falls to 3-6 overall and 0-1 in the LSC.
"It was nice to get a sweep at home in front of a great crowd," commented ASU Head Coach Chuck Waddington. "The crowd was very loud a supportive of us. We started of strong in the first set and played clean and were doing the things that we have been trying to do in practice throughout the week. I was a little disappointed in second set as we had the upper hand and let it slide a little. Our team rose to the challenge in the third set and made some runs late in that set to give us the win."
Mallory Blauser and Abbie Lynn headed the attack for the Belles as they each marked double-digit kills for the night. Blauser led the team with 12 kills, marking her eighth consecutive match with double-figure numbers. The senior recorded a stellar .440 attack percentage for match. Her 11 digs earned her a fourth double-double on the season. Lynn followed rocketing in 11 total kills from the right side. The junior marked a .391 clip for the match and added a block to her defensive number for the season.
Libero Brooke Robertson turned in a solid performance both defensively and from the service line. The Argyle, Texas native was one of two players on the team to record a team most and career high 15 digs. The junior also lit it up from the service line dropping in a team and career high five service aces.
Distributing for ASU, freshman Meghan Parker added her seventh match in 2016 with at least 40 assists. Her career high 15 digs gave the two-time LSC Setter of the Week her team leading sixth double-double. Â
Freshman Tulani Titley and junior Brianna Sotello added depth to the Belles. Titley led the Belles with a pair of blocks and tied her season best with eight kills. Sotello was third on the squad with nine kills and assisted the defense with seven digs.
The Belles came out firing in the first set with a 7-2 run led by a pair of aces from Robertson. With the score 8-5 in the Belles favor, Sotello, Blauser and Morgan Seaton rocketed in kills to stretch ASU's lead to eight. With an 18-11 lead, Angelo State embarked on another large 8-1 run that saw big kills from Sotello, Lynn, and Seaton. Mallory Davidson closed the set out of for the Belles with consecutive service aces.
Texas Woman's struck first in the second set, but ASU would quickly recover with a massive 15-2 run with Robertson, Lynn, Blauser, Sotello and Titley all contributed key points. With a 15-3 lead the Pioneers would begin to climb back, but could only manage to bring the match to within a seven point difference with a score of 20-13. The Belles then scored four straight points, two from Titley, to bring the team to match point. At 24-14 TWU attempted another run to close the game but after three straight points, Lynn put the nail in the coffin driving in the final kill to give ASU a 2-0 set lead.
In the final set, Lynn and Titley continued the momentum for Belles as they each recorded a kill and combined for a block. After a service error gave TWU its first point, ASU got back on track an climbed to a 6-1 lead that was kicked off with a Blauser kill. The Pioneers would battle back bringing the score to an even 15 before Sotello and Seaton got the home team back on track with back-to-back kills. With the score sitting at 17-16, Sotello kicked off an 8-2 run that Closed out the match for the Belles. Titley would score the final point for ASU.
The Belles return to the Stephens Arena at the Junell center on Saturday, September 17 to continue its LSC schedule with Texas A&M – Commerce (5-5, 0-1 LSC). The Lions will be seeking to bounce back after being swept by Tarleton State (25-18, 25-17, 25-21).  Â
