No. 16 Belles Fast Start Takes Down UC-Colorado Springs 3-1

COLROADO SPRINGS, Colorado – The No. 16 Angelo State soccer team scored three goals in the first 14 minutes of the match to defeat UC-Colorado Springs 3-1 on Friday evening at Mountain Lion Stadium.

The Belles (1-0) created 20 shots on the night with nine shots on goal while also limiting the Mountain Lions (0-1) to just six shots. Eight different ASU players recorded at least one shot. Angelo State is now 3-0-2 in its last five season openers.

"It was a great start to the season," Angelo State head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "To have a freshman (Trenadey Scott) score the first goal of the season and have Demi (Tsambasis) score two in 24 seconds and all three to be in the first 15 minutes was fantastic."

It didn't take long for the Belles to find the net. Haley Mendel found Trenadey Scott in space and the freshman put it past the keeper for her first career goal just four minutes into the match.

Demi Tsambasis, who led the team with seven shots on the night, took a pass from Mendel and buried the ball in the left side of the net at 12:51. Mendel finished the night with two assists and one shot on goal.

Just 24 seconds later, Tsambasis stunned the crowd with her second goal of the season. The senior blew by a defender to find a free ball behind the defense. Running by herself, she was able to beat the UCCS keeper for her second goal of the season.

Five of Tsambasis seven shots were on goal for the Belles. Scott ended the night with four shots and Tiffany Dang added three. Elizabeth Rodriguez took two shots while Mendel, Morgan Sibson, Ally Warren and Analise Watson each had one shot.

"I was happy with the amount of players that got a chance to play," McCorkle said. "I thought the players that came off the bench did a great job of maintaining the pressure that we wanted. We talked about wanting a shutout in the second half and to play as many players as we did and maintain it was a good sign for the future."

Lauren Eshelman earned her first career win and made one save. Sammy Cude saw action in the second half and also made one save.

The Belles will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 11 a.m. CDT with a match against Adams State in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
