ODESSA, Texas – The No. 8 Angelo State volleyball team remained undefeated in LSC Play as it swept UT – Permian Basin (25-15, 25-14, 25-21) on the road Friday night.
The Belles improved to 13-1 overall and remained undefeated in the Lone Star Conference. With the win, the Belles extended their winning streak to five games. The ASU defense racked up a season high 11 total team blocks and held the opponent to a -.020 clip for the night. With the loss the Falcons fall to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in the LSC.
"Not our cleanest match of the season, but it was an important win nonetheless," commented ASU Head Coach Chuck Waddington. "We've always struggled in that gym. While the score may not indicate that, we'll need to be a lot better in "The Box" tomorrow afternoon.
Mallory Blauser, Abbie Lynn and Brianna Sotello continued to lead the ASU attack. Blauser and Lynn shared the team lead as each fired in eight kills each, while Sotello followed with seven. Blauser also aided the Belles defensive efforts with a team second three total blocks and eight digs for the night. Sotello continues to lead the team overall as she added seven more blocks to her season numbers.
Anchoring the defense for Angelo State was Morgan Seaton, Leiyona Young and Brooke Robertson. Seaton tallied a team most five blocks for her second consecutive match. She helped the attack with four kills giving her a .500 attack percentage for the match. Young shared the second spot on the squad with three total blocks for the night, and added five kills on offense. Robertson once again led the Belles with 13 digs in her fourth start at the libero position. She has now racked up double-figure digs in four consecutive matches. The junior also led the team with a pair of aces from the service line.
Setting the ball for the Belles, Meghan Parker accrued 33 assists on the night. The freshman also added an ace to her overall team leading total and now has 20 on the season. On defense, she combined with Seaton fora block and turned in four digs for the match.
The Belles got is started early in the first set chalking up the first four points. This included Parker dropping in an ace for the first serve of the match. The Falcons would rally bringing the score back to an even 10, before a timely kill from Lynn would regain the final lead for ASU. This also jump started an 11-3 run by the Belles that saw big swings from Tulani Titley and Blauser, as well as solo blocks from Seaton and Blauser. With the score sitting at 22-14 in favor of ASU, Titley, Sotello and Lynn each rocketed in a kill to score three of the last four Belle points. This put the set away for Angelo State, giving them the early 1-0 lead.
It was the Falcons who struck first in the second set as they started with a service ace of their own. A Blauser kill followed by a Young and Lynn block set the Belles back on track and regained the lead. UTPB would keep it close until, with the score sitting at 10-8, consecutive kills by Sotello and Young began the pull away by the Belles. With 22-14 on the board, Seaton blazed in a kill which was followed up by a timely block from Blauser and Seaton. A Falcon ball handling error would close the set out and ASU took a 2-0 lead into the break.
UTPB once again scored the first points to begin the final set, however, they would not be able to retain it for long. Blauser and Lynn quickly got the rally started with a pair of kills and the Belles climbed back into the driver's seat. UTPB attempted to regain, bringing the score back to an even eight, but a Seaton kill, a service ace from Kelly Hasbrouck and multiple errors from the Falcons stifled the rally and places ASU ahead 14-8. The two teams battled to the end of the final set, with Young shutting the door on the match for the Belles with a kill.
The Belles continue its road trip as it heads up to Canyon, Texas to face West Texas A&M in "The Box" on Saturday, September 24 at 2 p.m.
