Belles Suffer First Conference Loss

SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State soccer team suffered its first loss in Lone Start Conference play this season on Friday night, falling to Midwestern State 1-0 at the ASU Soccer Field.

The Mustangs (4-1-2) were the first team to score on the Belles (5-2-1) at the ASU Soccer Field this season. It is also the first loss Angelo State has lost at home all year.

Multiple Belles got in on the attack against the Mustangs, as the team got off 25 shots total in the match with 17 coming in the second half. Forward Demi Tsambasis led the team in shots with seven, but only one was on goal. Ashley Exford and Kathleen Keoughan got off three apiece and all three of Exford's were on goal which led the team. Shay Williams, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Kylie Deel and Haley Mendel all also had two-shot performances.

"I thought we did a lot of good things tonight," Angelo State head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "We outshot them 17-4 in the second half and this is where our sport is unfair with stats. You get a lot of shots but we missed some opportunities tonight. I hope this game toughens us up and makes us hungry for the next game."

The two teams were held scoreless for the first half, with ASU holding the Mustangs to only three shots while getting eight themselves.

The Belle back line played strong once again, allowing less than ten shots and only five on goal throughout the entire match. The lone goal from the Mustangs came in the 83rd minute, snapping a streak of 373 consecutive minutes of shutout soccer the Belles had played at home.

Freshman goalkeeper Sammy Cude allowed the one goal, giving her just her second loss on the season and moving her overall record to 4-2-1.

The Belles will hit the road for their next match, facing West Texas A&M at 7 p.m. next Friday in Canyon.
