The No. 22 ASU volleyball team continued its hot start to the 2016 season, defeating St. Edwards (25-12, 25-19, 25-20) and Regis (25-17, 21-25, 25-19, 25-23) to wrap up this year's Kathleen Brasfield Invitational with a perfect 4-0 record.
The two wins for the Belles moved them to 4-0 on the season, while St. Edward's fell to 1-3 Â and Regis moved to 2-2. ASU was helped in the first match win by an attack percentage of .295 and had three players finish the second match with double-digit kills.
Defeating St. Edward's in the first match of the day also brought a milestone for ASU head coach Chuck Waddington, as he notched his 200th career win.
Outside hitter Brianna Sotello led the Belles in kills (11) in the match that became Waddington's 200th career victory and also added in 10 digs for her second double-double in the young season. The Belles were also aided by a team-high four service aces from freshman setter Meghan Parker and four blocks from middle blocker Morgan Seaton.
Parker also led the team with 36 assists in the first match and the 11 digs she added in earned the freshman her first career double-double. Â
In the evening match, outside hitter Mallory Blauser(14), right side Abbie Lynn (11) and Seaton (12) all finished with kills in the double digits, most of which were assisted by Parker, who finished with a team high 44 in the final match of the invitational. Seaton led the team with a .522 clip against Regis. Lynn also had double-digit kills (10) with an attack percentage of .526 in the Belles' noon match against St. Edward's, and Parker added in 12 digs for her second double-double.
Leiyona Young led the team in blocks against Regis with six. Libero Micheala Sifuentes led the team in digs with 14, but was closely followed by Kelly Hasbrouck who tallied 13 in the match.
Both Blauser and Lynn were selected for the all-tournament team.
"We got better with every match," commented ASU Head Coach Chuck Waddington. "When the competition got tougher we got tougher and I was really happy to see that. I feel like we are improving and it was a great start against some good competition. We are still doing a lot of thigs good, but I want to be doing them great."
Lynn got things rolling for the Belles in its first match of the day with a kill that was masterfully set up by Parker. With the score tied at three, a block by Seaton and Parker gave ASU its first lead of the match. A Hilltopper service error kicked off a 13-3 run by ASU that saw big hits from Seaton, Blauser, Sotello, Lynn and a pair of service aces from Parker. With a 20-12 lead, the Belles went on a tear scoring five consecutive points to take a 1-0 set lead. The team finished the set attacking at an outstanding .387 clip.
St. Edward's struck first in the second set, taking advantage of a Belle attacking error. ASU rallied scoring eight of the next ten points to take an 8-3 lead. Kills by Young, Sotello and Parker pushed the Belles lead over 16-8. The Hiltoppers would fight back and pull to within five points with the score 22-17. Blauser and Lynn would close out the set giving Angelo State a 2-0 lead combining for final three scores.
The Belles struck first again with a set by Parker and a kill from Lynn to start off set three, but the Hilltoppers stormed back to take an early 4-2 lead. Some back and forth action pushed the Belles to an 11-10 lead, when the Belles reeled off the next five points and created some breathing room. The two teams resumed a back and forth, but ASU maintained their lead and finished off a three-set sweep with a 25-20.
In the tournament finale, ASU fans were treated to a 2015 South Central Regional quarterfinal rematch as the Belles took on Regis.
The set started well for the Belles as the opened the game with a 6-2 run for some early breathing room. Regis was never able to catch up again in the first set and Angelo State grew their lead to as much as 10 points at 20-10. The Rangers attempted a comeback, but ASU was able to snuff it out with a 4-1 run that won the match for them, 25-17.
Set two started out the exact opposite for the Belles and they found themselves in an early 0-3 hole before getting their first point on a kill from Blauser. ASU was able to come back and take the lead in the match at 12-10. Regis then went on its best run of the night, scoring 12 of the next 15 points to open up a 21-14 lead.
ASU tried to close the gap with a couple of three-point runs led by Brianna Sotello, but Regis was able to keep them at bay and hand the Belles their first set loss of the season, 25-21.
Set three saw the Belles post their best hitting percentage of the match with Regis at .243 and reclaim the momentum. The game tight early, but with the team's knotted up at seven, Â Sotello rattled off four straight kills as a part of a 7-1 ASU run to put the Belles up 13-8.
ASU continued to keep ahead with several three-point runs throughout the rest of the set before Parker set up Lynn with the kill to end it, 25-21, and put the Belles on top two sets to one.
Regis would not go down without a fight, however, and the fourth set was tight to the 14th point, when the Rangers went on a 4-0 run and forced Waddington to call a timeout. ASU responded with a 5-0 run of its own to retake the lead.
The Rangers took the lead again at 22-21, but ASU had one last 3-0 run to put them on top for good and win the final set 25-23.
Next on the schedule for the Belles is the first road trip of the 2016 season, with matchups against Adams State and Colorado State Pueblo at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. CST on Wednesday in Pueblo, Colorado.
