KINGSVILLE, Texas – The No. 15 Angelo State women's basketball team outscored Texas A&M-Kingsville 26-15 in the fourth quarter to secure a 70-63 Lone Star Conference road victory on Tuesday evening.
The Belles (15-2, 9-2 LSC) shot 44.4 percent from the field and scored 24 points from the free throw line. The Javelinas (9-8, 4-7 LSC) outrebounded ASU 37-30 but committed 21 turnovers including five in the fourth quarter. The game featured 12 lead changes and seven ties.
"We didn't play very well tonight but I am so impressed with our toughness," Angelo State head women's basketball coach
Kevin Baker said. "They were extremely physical with us and we had to tough it out. We made key free throws and took a charge to take the win. The team found a way to win and sometimes that is very hard to do."
Taylor Dorsey led four Belles in double figures with 14 points.
Madi Greenwood scored 13 points and hit three 3-pointers.
Jasmine Prophet and
Chenelle Pelle each added 11 points.
Christina Robinson chipped in nine points and seven rebounds. Six of Robinson's points came at the free throw line.
Texas A&M-Kingsville was up 48-44 but ASU opened the fourth quarter with a 12-3 run capped off with a 3-pointer by Greenwood with 6:22 to go that gave the Belles their largest lead of the game to that point at 56-51. The Javelinas responded with a 10-1 run to take a 61-57 advantage with 4:07 left. A Prophet layup cut the deficit to two and a Dorsey layup tied the game at 61 at the 2:26 mark. The Belles would score eight points, all by way of the charity stripe, and hold Texas A&M-Kingsville to just two points to take a tough road victory 70-63.
ASU had started off slow only scoring 11 points in the first quarter. Nine of the 11 points came from the bench as Pelle scored five and Greenwood added four points. Texas A&M-Kingsville went up by three but at 5-2 but an 8-2 run put the Belles up going into the second quarter.
The two teams traded leads to start the second quarter until a three pointer by TAMUK's Meesha Moore game her team some breathing room. The Javelinas took a seven-point lead at two different points in the second quarter. Down 27-20 with 2:55 to go, the Belles scored seven of the last 11 points to cut TAMUK's lead down to 32-29.
The Javelinas opened the second half with a 3-pointer but ASU responded with a 9-0 run to take a 38-35 lead with 5:06 left in the third quarter. Dorsey scored six straight points to keep ASU up 42-39. TAMUK finished the quarter on a 9-2 run to take a 48-44 lead into the fourth quarter.
Kaylee Kana led TAMUK with a double-double scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
The Belles will continue their road trip in Denton to face Texas Woman's on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m.
