The Game
The Angelo State football team will return after a bye week and welcome No. 6 Midwestern State on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field.
Midwestern State
The Mustangs are undefeated at 4-0 and 3-0 in the Lone Star Conference after a 47-42 win over then No. 3 Texas A&M-Commerce. Bill Maskill is in his 16th season at the helm of Midwestern State.
Last Meeting
The Rams scored 21 second half points to tie No. 4 Midwestern State but the Mustangs scored a go-ahead touchdown with 16 seconds left as the Rams fell 28-21 at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls. ASU had battled back from a 21-0 halftime deficit to tie the game on a
Trey Green 10 yard run at the 8:45 mark of the fourth quarter but was unable to complete the comeback.
The Series
This will be the 20th meeting all-time between the two programs. Midwestern State has won 12 of the 20 battles that started in 1999. MSU has won six of the last eight with ASU taking two wins in 2014. The games have been close the last six matchups with only one being decided by double digits. The margin of victory has been eight points dating back to 2012.
Outstanding Specialists
Connor Flanigan and Tyler Englebart had career days against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Flanigan knocked down a 28 yard field goal and a 37 yard field goal. The 37 yarder was a career long for the sophomore. Engelbart recorded six punts and averaged 47.8 yards per punt. He put four inside the 20 with a long of 66 yards.
Top 10 Passing Game
Charlie Rotherham threw fo rthe 10th most yards in a single game with 386 passing yards. The sophomore went 28-for-51 and threw two touchdowns. It is Rotherham's career high for yards, completions and attempts.
Chasing History
Donovan Thompson continues to inch closer to the ASU career recieivng record. He added 121 receiving yards against Texas A&M-Kingsville and now has 2.284 career receiving yards. He has eight career games of at least 100 yards receiving. He is currently No. 4 on the all-time list. He needs 547 yards to surpass Dakarai Pecikonis as ASU's all-time career leader.
Offensive Increase
The Rams offense has improved from last season through the first five games of the season. In 2016, ASU averaged 302.8 yards per game and 21.4 points per game. ASU has surpassed those numbers significantly this season. The Rams are scoring 35.0 points per game and have the No. 11 ranked offense in total yards at 488.2 per game.
Limit Points in Second Half
The Rams defense excels in the second half of games by only allowed a combined 22 points (4.4 points per game). McKendree and Texas A&M-Kingsville were held scoreles in the second half and only two touchdowns have been scored after halftime.
Ranked Opponents
The Rams will face a ranked opponent for the first time this season. ASU is 1-6 in its last seven attempts versus a ranked opponent. The last win versus a ranked opponent came in a 42-41 win over No. 18 Michigan Tech in the first round of the NCAA Division II playoffs in 2014.
Sack Leader
Markus Jones has been able to put the pressure on opposing quarterbacks this season. The junior has five solo sacks this season and is the conference leader averaging 1.00 sacks per game. He has also accounted for 7.5 tackles for loss on the year.
Quick Strike Offense
The Rams have continued to score quickly once they get the ball. Of the 28 scoring drives for Angelo State 18 have been under 2 minutes or less. The fastest scoring drive was the season opener that took a swift 53 seconds while the longest has only been 3:48.
Passing Defense
The Ram defense is No. 1 in the LSC and No. 49 nationally in passing yards allowed. ASU has limited teams to just 192.0 yards per game through four games this season.
Bright Shines Against Tarleton State
Bright Ihegworo had one of the best days of his career against TSU. The sophomore set a career high with three sacks and four tackles for loss. He also tied his career high with 11 total tackles. It is the most sacks in a game by a Ram this season and the most since
Markus Jones had four against OPSU in 2016.
Stevens' Career Day
Josh Stevens went over 100-yards for the second time this season and set a new career mark against Tarleton State. The senior carried the ball 23 times for a career high 169 yards. He had a long of 43 and averaged a staggering 7.3 yards per carry. He scored once on teh ground and added 44 yards receiving as well.
Lawrence Moves Up INT List
Fred Lawrence picked of Zed Woerner for his first interception of the season and the ninth of the senior's career. He is one interception away from eighth player in ASU history with double digit carer intercepions. He is currently tied for No. 8 on the all-tiime list with nine.
Career Day for Ayo
Lawson Ayo had his best day as a Ram against Northern Michigan. The sophomore caught a career-high nine passes for a career high 165 yards. He also caught two touchdowns including a 47-yard reception that he made defenders miss to score. It is the most receiving yards by a reciever since
Donovan Thompson's 187 in 2015.
Larry & Keke's First Catch
Larry Johnson duplicated Keke Chism's feat on Saturday against Nothern Michigan. The sophomore caught a 30-yard touchdown pass for his first career TD and catch. Keke Chism h ad a memorable first career catch as a Ram in his debut as well against McKendree. The redshirt freshman's first catch was a 14-yard touchdown from
Jake Faber. The Daingerfield product recorded two receptions for 23 yards in his debut as a Ram.
1,000 Rushing Yards
Josh Stevens rushed for 1,030 yards in 2016, and it was the 12th time a Ram has rushed for over 1,000 yards. He is the 10th player to surpass the plateau and will try to become the third to do it in back-to-back seasons joining Jerry Austin (1970-71) and Charlie Franklin (1937-74).
Rams Draft Anthony Quintana
The Angelo State football team added a new member to its team last season by drafting TeamIMPACT's Anthony Quintana. ASU is the first LSC school to draft a player from TeamIMPACT. Anthony, a nine-year old from Water Valley, will spend the year two of three with the Ram football team interacting with the team while battling recurrent respiratory papillomatosis.
#RamFam Connection
Two current Rams have connections to Rams of the past. Brennan Bibbs heard about ASU from former All-American uncle Henry Alsbrooks. Alsbrooks played defense for ASU and was a 1988 All-Americna. He recorded 271 tackles and is No. 10 all-time in career tackles. Myron Turner, Jr. plays opposite side of his dad Myron. The elder was an all-conference performer in 1989 and 1990. He is No. 8 on the career receiving yard list with 1,704 yards and led ASU in yards in 1989 with 706 yards.

The Rams will once again be carried on KWFR 101.9 The Fire with five time Lone Star Conference Broadcaster of the Year Jeremy Bryant on the call. He will be joined by Dr. John Klingemann in the booth for color analysis. Dr. Klingemann is the chair of the history department and an associate professor at Angelo State.
Ram Jam
The ASU Alumni Association hosts a pre-game tailgate at the LeGrand Alumni and Visitors Center two and a half hours prior to kickoff. Food and refreshment will be available as will live music throughout the season. Bring your family out to support the Rams at Ram Jam. LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field
The Rams begin their third season at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field Angelo State is 12-6 at home since moving on
campus in 2014. The stadium capacity is 5,670 and is Wi-Fi friendly. A new press box is currently being constructed and new bathrooms and
concession stands are available at the south east corner of the stadium.
Head Coach
Will Wagner (Hardin-Simmons, '96) will begin his sixth season as head coach of the Rams. He is 38-33 in his six seasons at the helm of the Rams. The Odessa native helped Northwest Missouri State win three national championships as an assistant head coach and defensive backs coach.

The Program
Angelo State won the NAIA National Championship in 1978 and has won three Lone Star Conference Championships (1978, 1984, 1987). The Rams have seen five NCAA D-II playoff appearances and produced 57 All-Americans. Angelo State has sent 11 student-athletes on to successful NFL careers, including Pierce Holt, who earned two Super Bowl rings with the San Francisco 49ers in 1988 and 1989. He was a two-time Pro Bowl selection and was inducted into the NCAA Division II Football Hall of Fame in 2000. Legendary Baylor head coach Grant Teaff played and coached at ASU, and has been inducted into the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame with Holt and former Ram tackle Rodney Cason.
