Belles Win LSC Title Outright with 1-0 Win Against TWU

SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State soccer team defeated Texas Woman's 1-0 Friday night at the ASU Soccer Field, clinching sole possession of the 2017 Lone Star Conference regular season championship in the process.

The Belles (12-2-1, 9-1-1 LSC) pushed their win streak to six games with the win, while the Pioneers dropped to 5-8-4 and 2-6-3 in the LSC. The conference title is the second for ASU to clinch by themselves and their third overall.

ASU will now host the LSC Postseason Tournament next weekend at the ASU Soccer Field. There will be games at 5 and 7:30 p.m. on Friday with the championship game taking place at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

"The game wasn't the prettiest," Angelo State Head Soccer Coach Travis McCorkle said. "I told the girls before that in games like this, where everything is on the line, it's going to be more physical, and it was. But, we got away with the win. Trenadey scored a great goal and there were maybe some others that we left on the table, so hopefully we find those in the next couple of games."

Holding TWU to just 14 shots overall and only six on goal, ASU earned its sixth shutout of the season in the win.

Sammy Cude stopped all six of the shots on goal, lowering her goals against average to 1.06 and raising her save percentage to .826. The California native has made 76 total saves this season.

Callie Smith, Marissa Brezgiel, Kylie Deel, Molly Warren and Kyah Carlsen made up the back line throughout the night, keeping the Pioneers from scoring.

TWU did have the majority of the chances early on, racking up four shots in the first ten minutes, but ASU held them off.

Elizabeth Rodriguez created the first scoring chance for Angelo State in the eighth minute forcing the TWU goalkeeper to make a save. Neither team, however, was able to get on board in the first 30 minutes.

ASU sophomore forward Trenadey Scott finally broke the scoreless tie in the 25th minute. Scott went out wide left of the goal as freshman Avery McNeme dribbled the ball up the middle. McNeme then sent a through ball to Scott and the Fort Worth native finished the goal with a shot to the back post.

The goal was Scott's 15th of the season, tying her for the second most in a single season by and ASU player. Sierra Anderson also had 15 goals during the 2014 season.

It was also McNeme's fourth assist of the season, tying her for the team lead.

Several other Belles created scoring chances throughout the game, including Cassandra Moosburger, Mackenzie Broderick, Analise Watson, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Tiffany Dang and McNeme. Overall, Angelo State had 22 shots including nine on goal.

The score held for the final ten minutes of the half, and ASU went into the break with the one-goal lead.

Despite the Pioneers getting off another eight shots in the second half, ASU was able to hold off TWU for the final 45 minutes, clinching the title in the process.

The Belles have one final regular season, hosting Senior Day as they take on Texas A&M-Commerce at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the ASU Soccer Field.
