Belles Drop Finale, Finish No. 1 in LSC

SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State soccer team lost its final regular season home game 0-1 against Texas A&M-Commerce on Sunday afternoon, but still finished No. 1 in the Lone Star Conference.

The Belles (12-3-1, 9-2-1 LSC) will now host the LSC postseason tournament on November 3-5, with two games on Friday at 5 and 7:30 and the championship at 1 p.m. on Sunday. ASU will take on the winner of the game between Eastern New Mexico and Midwestern State in the 7:30 p.m. game on Friday.

ASU honored its eight seniors prior to the game, as the group played the last regular season home game of their careers. The class included Loni Byers, Tiffany Dang, Lauren Eshelman, Elyssia Lucio, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Morgan Sibson, Callie Smith and Molly Warren.

Neither ASU nor TAMC gave up much ground in the match overall, with each team getting exactly the same amount of shots, saves and corner kicks.

Goalkeepeer Sammy Cude made five saves in the match on six shots on goal from the Lions, only letting in the difference-making goal on a penalty kick TAMC was awarded in the 25th minute.

Angelo State had chances in the first half as well, getting off five shots, but went into the break still down a goal.

The Belle defense worked even harder in the second half, allowing Texas A&M-Commerce just five shots, while ASU got off nine of their own.

Callie Smith led the back line at center back, along with Marissa Brezgiel, Kylie Deel, Molly Warren, Cecilia Guerrero, and Kyah Carlsen.

Freshman Avery McNeme led the ASU attack with a pair of shots on goal, and Smith, Cassandra Moosburger, and Trenadey Scott all had shots on goal as well.

Other Belles to create chances were Analise Watson, Ally Warren, Mackenzie Broderick, Tiffany Dang and Elizabeth Rodriguez.

ASU earned several opportunities in the final ten minutes of the match, taking an indirect free kick and a pair of corners as the match wound down, but were unable to find the back of the net for an equalizer.

The Belles will now move into the postseason with the LSC Tournament and a possible bid in the NCAA South Central Regional.
