SAN ANGELO – The No. 25 Angelo State volleyball team came away from Friday night's match with a sweep of Eastern New Mexico (25-17, 25-13, 25-21).
With the win, the Belles climbed to 20-8 overall and 12-7 in Lone Star Conference play. ASU attack came away with from the victory with a .303 team clip and had four players venture into double-digit kill territory. With a .458 attack percentage for the night Sundara Chinn lead the pack with 13 kills and was followed by Brianna Sotello (11), Morgan Seaton (10) and Anna Graham (10).
The offense racked up an outstanding 10 aces to the Greyhounds one. Continuing to distribute the ball for the Belles, Meghan Parker turned 43 assists for the night to lead the team. The sophomore also recorded a double-double on the night as she tallied a team second 12 digs, behind Bailey Mulder's squad leading 18. ENMU falls to 12-17, 9-10 LSC with Friday's loss.
"I was nice to see us respond, put a solid game plan together, execute and come away with a nice three set win," commented ASU Head Volleyball Coach Chuck Waddington. "We had four girls in double-figure kills, which means our setter was doing a really nice job of moving the ball around. Our Bailey [Mulder] had 18 digs in a three set match and we played well. We played a complete game in all aspects."
Angelo State got things started off strong as it leaped out to a 6-2 lead. The Greyhounds would chip away at ASU's early lead and tie the match at 11; however, a kill from Chinn would halt ENMU's 7-2 run. This was follow by a Seaton kill and another one from Chinn to push the Belles back in front. Â Angelo State would then hold ENMU at bay, until a Sotello kill kicked off a lengthy finishing run of five straight points. The run saw a Parker ace, swings from Seaton and Chinn, who also closed out the set with a timely block. Seaton would go on to be one of two Belles that capped the night with a pair of blocks, which included Ali Davison and Graham.
The high gear and embarked on a 13-3 journey that at one point saw six straight ASU points. An ENMU error would send the two teams into the break with Angelo State holding on to a favorable 2-0 set advantage.
In an attempt to avoid the sweep, the Greyhounds took a quick 6-4 lead in the final set. Two straight Graham kills followed by a Davison kill and an ENMU error would place the Belles back in front. Eastern New Mexico would however battle back and slowly brought the set back to 17 all, But as before Graham would answer and put down the first of four straight points. Angelo State would hold on to the lead and a Sotello kill sent the Belles victory lane.
Angelo State returns to the court on Saturday, November 10 to celebrate its senior class at 2 p.m. The Belles will then close out the regular season with a match against Western New Mexico, which be coming off of a sweep at the hands of Tarleton State. Â Â Â Â Â
