MELBOURNE, Florida – The Angelo State softball team dropped its final game of the Florida Tech Marriott First Pitch Classic 4-3 to Florida Tech on Sunday afternoon.
The Rambelles (4-1) slugged two home runs and out hit Florida Tech (3-2) 9-5 but left nine runners on base. Angelo State also struck out eight times in the loss.
"It was a tough loss today," Angelo State head softball coach
Travis Scott said. "We are excited with what we saw this weekend. We competed until the bitter end and look forward to playing at home in front of our fans for the George McCorkle Challenge."
Florida Tech jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as ASU starter
Brandy Marlett gave up four walks in the first inning.
Karina Rocha got ASU on the board with her first collegiate home run in the top of the third inning. The freshman sent the ball over the left field fence to tie the game.
Bailey Wallace would give the Rambelles the lead scoring on an error by the Florida Tech first baseman.
Florida Tech took back the lead in the bottom of the third with three runs on four hits.
ASU tried to answer in the fifth with runners on second and third but couldn't answer.
Kenedy Urbany came in relief in the fourth inning and held Florida Tech scoreless over three innings. The senior only allowed one hit. The Helotes native started a comeback with a solo home run to center field in the top of the seventh to cut the deficit to 4-3. Florida Tech's Rachel Pence ended the ASU comeback getting a line out and pop up to strand a runner at first.
Marlett was credited with the loss giving up four runs on four hits. The senior walked four and only struck out two batters.
The Rambelles will host the ASU George McCorkle Challenge and season opener on Friday, Feb. 10 at 12:45 p.m. at Mayer Stadium.
