Rams Complete Sweep With 13-11 Win on Sunday

SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State baseball team swept its first Lone Star Conference series of the 2017 season with a 13-11 win over Cameron on Sunday at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

The Rams (21-4) reached the double-digit scoring mark for the fourth straight game against the Aggies (18-11), racking up 16 hits in the matchup to earn the win.

Cameron opened the scoring in the high-scoring series finale with three runs in the top of the first and another two in the second to build an early 5-0 lead.

ASU quickly came back, however, by sending 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the second and scoring seven times to take the lead. Senior catcher Matt Waller led off the inning with an infield it, the first of two he would record in the frame. Both Steven Pinales and Jacob Boston followed with singles of their own to score Waller. ASU recorded another four hits in the inning, including a two-run home run from Mitch Henshaw, his third of the series.

The Aggies briefly retook the lead in the third inning with another three runs to go up 8-7, but it was again short-lived. Boston led off the bottom half of the third with a four-pitch walk and Tyler Coolbaugh hit the second pitch he saw over the right field wall for two runs and a new lead. Jay Gonzales would follow with a single for his second hit of the day and come around to score as well on a sacrifice fly from Elias Aguirre.

Overall on the day, seven different Rams finished with RBI led by Coolbaugh with three and three others had two each.

The Rams never trailed again in the matchup, scoring another pair of runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to get the final total of 13 runs. CU also scored again in sixth and eighth, but was unable to close the gap.

ASU pitcher Kenton Schroter was on the mound when the Rams retook the lead for the final time, earning him the win. Schroter is now 5-0 on the season, which ties him for the team lead.

Joe Hauser came in to relieve Schroter in the sixth inning and ended up pitching the final three and two thirds of the game. Hauser gave up just two hits and one run in his time on the mound, striking out four and shutting the door for his eighth save of the season, which leads the Lone Star Conference.

The Rams will be on the road for their next series, traveling to Stephenville to take on Tarleton in a four-game series March 31 through April 2.
