Rams Sweep Doubleheader to Win Series Against ENMU

SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State baseball team swept a doubleheader Saturday with 7-3 and 5-3 wins over Eastern New Mexico on Saturday at Foster Field at First Community Credit Union Stadium.

The Rams (12-1) only outhit the Greyhounds (14-3) by four on the day, but were able to outscore them by the same amount in order to win both games.

Ryan Smith got his first start of the season in game one of the doubleheader and earned his third win on the year. The Waco native pitched four of the seven innings in the game, giving up just one earned run on four hits with one strikeout.

Angelo State gave Smith an early lead in his first start with the team, as Jonathan Soberanes singled up the middle to lead off the game. Soberanes advanced to second on a fielder's choice and then eventually came around to score when Steven Pinales singled through the left side.

Soberanes was the Rams leading hitter in game one, going 4-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored in the game, and the junior now leads the team with 20 total hits on the year.

ENMU tied the game up and retook the lead with a run in the third and in the fourth inning, but the Rams responded in the bottom of the fourth with three runs on three hits and an error to jump back out in front.

The Greyhounds cut the deficit back to one run by scoring in the top of the fifth, but it would be their last run of the first game.

ASU tacked on three more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead to 7-3. Dustin Angiel came in to close out the game and pitched a scoreless seventh inning, slamming the door and securing the win for the Rams.

Eastern New Mexico opened the scoring in game two of the doubleheader with Shane Browning on the mound for Angelo State. Browning gave up a solo home run to Garlind Webster in the bottom of the second to give the Greyhounds an early lead. The run would end up being the only one Browning gave up all day in his three and one third innings on the mound. Browning struck out four on the day.

The Greyhound lead was short-lived, as ASU got on the board in the second as well. Catcher Matt Waller walked with one out in the inning, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout from Tyler Coolbaugh. Waller then came around to score on a balk while Mitch Henshaw was at the plate to tie the game up.

Waller was credited with just one at-bat on the day, but played a part in another one of the Rams' runs, hitting a sacrifice fly in the fourth to score Pinales and break the 1-1 deadlock.

The Rams scored again in the fifth to extend their lead when a bunt single from Elias Aguirre scored outfielder Michael Urquidi. Aguirre is second on the team in hits this season with 19 hits.

ASU added another two runs in the sixth inning for insurance on hits by Pinales, Coolbaugh and Henshaw. The sixth inning was also the first inning pitched for reliever Joe Hauser, who came in for the save in the game.

Hauser gave up his first two runs of the season in the top of the seventh inning, but still was able to earn his sixth save on the year and preserve the Rams' second win of the day.

Angelo State will go for the series sweep of Eastern New Mexico in the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday at Foster Field at First Community Credit Union Stadium.
