SAN ANGELO - Angelo State used five pitchers but gave up just three hits on Tuesday night at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium, topping St. Mary's 10-1.
The win was the 30th of the season for the Rams, who have just eight losses on the year. ASU head coach Kevin Brooks has now won at least 30 games in 11 of his seasons with the team.
Blake Barr was the first pitcher on the bump for the Rams in the game, earning his first win of the season in the game. Barr pitched the first three innings of the game, giving up just one hit while striking out two Rattler batters.
Barr was also given an early lead, as the Rams got four runs on the board in the first inning. Second basemen Jonathan Soberanes led off the game with a single to right field to get ASU started. Five other Angelo State players ended up singling in the inning, bringing across four total runs.
The Rams added another run in the third to increase the lead to 5-0 in Barr's last inning of work. In the fourth, the junior hurler would be replaced by Jake Mathys, who continued the scoreless streak for another two innings.
Mathys was followed by Dustin Angiel on the mound, making his 16th appearance of the season and then Jhonatan Del Rosario, who each worked one inning of work. Del Rosario's appearance was his fifth of the season, and he has yet to give up a run.
The Ram batters busted the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning after Angiel's inning on the mound. Catcher Zach Fleet led off the inning with a single, his third of the night. Overall on the night, the senior finished 4-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Tyler Coolbaugh, Steven Pinales and Jacob Boston all singled up the middle in the inning as well, plating three runs overall.
The final two ASU runs came in the bottom of the eighth, when ASU emptied the bench with four straight pinch hitters. Michael Urquidi was one and singled up the middle, and Omar Martinez followed with a hit by pitch with two outs. Nick Novak followed with a triple down the left field line to score the two runners.
Kenton Schroter finished out the game on the mound for the Rams in the eighth and ninth inning without allowing a baserunner.
The Rams will be on the road for their next series, traveling to Portales to take on Eastern New Mexico in a four-game series over the weekend.
