SAN ANGELO – The No. 1 Angelo State softball team fell in the LSC Tournament Championship game 2-1 to No. 5 West Texas A&M at Mayer Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Rambelles had their 16-game win streak snapped and are 52-5 overall this season. The Lady Buffs improve to 41-9 and claim the LSC's automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Regional. WT was held to five hits but ASU left 10 runners on base.
Morgan Hill would keep the talented WT offense at bay through the first four innings. The Lady Buffs had two on in the first with no out but Hill got a fly ball, strikeout and a grounder to end the threat. Hill had to work out of another two on no out jam in the third. Two pop-ups and a grounder to first base kept the game scoreless.
ASU took the first lead on a RBI single from Taegan Kirk in the bottom of the fourth. The sophomore hit a bloop single to right field that bounced away from the WT fielder to allow pinch runner Kelly Johnson to score.
WT threatened again in the fifth after a leadoff double from Alyx Cordell. After two outs, ASU intentionally walked Ashley Hardin. Hill pushed the count to two balls and two strikes before Brandy Marlett came in relief to end the threat.
The game moved into the seventh inning with Angelo State hanging on to a 1-0 advantage. WT's Shea Ibrahim drew a leadoff walk but with one out Hardin sent a pitch over the left field fence to take a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
Bailey Wallace hit a double to right field with one out and Kenedy Urbany drew a walk. The Lady Buffs got a grounder and a pop-up to end the game. Marlett was credited with just her fourth loss of the season.Â
The Rambelles, who have been ranked No. 1 in the South Central Region, will wait for NCAA Division II playoff selection announced on Monday, May 8 at 9 a.m.
