Belles Dominate in 74-52 Win at Western New Mexico

SILVER CITY, New Mexico – The Angelo State women's basketball team had four players score in double figures led by double-doubles from De'Anira Moore and Ekiya Gray in a 74-52 win on the road over Western New Mexico on Thursday evening.

The Belles (11-4, 6-3 LSC) limited the Mustangs (0-17, 0-9 LSC) to just three points in the fourth quarter and outrebounded WNMU 55-26. Angelo State limited WNMU to 31.9 percent from the field and forced 15 turnovers. ASU scored 50 points in the paint compared to just 12 for WNMU and scored 27 second chance points on 30 offensive rebounds. The 30 offensive rebounds are the most in a single game since at least 2003.

"Rebounding and taking care of the basketball were two of our goals for winning tonight's game," Angelo State head women's basketball coach Renae Shippy said. "Our team did an excellent job of executing in those two areas tonight and I was proud of their effort. I have never been a part of a game where we were +30 on the boards but our girls resilient in rebounding tonight. Ekiya Gray and De'Anira Moore were huge factors tonight and Mikayla Blount came off the bench with tremendous energy and knocked down some big shots. Mikayla can do that every night and it was great to see her have a big game."

Moore recorded her seventh double-double of the season with a team high 15 points and 12 rebounds. Gray added 10 point with a career high 14 rebounds of which nine were offensive rebounds. Mikayla Blount chipped in 11 points on the night and Dezirae Hampton scored 10 with six rebounds and four assists.

Angelo State scored the first four points of the game on consecutive layups and WNMU quickly answered with a 3-pointer from Ciara Fields at the 7:03 mark. The Belles stepped up the rebounding and defense and held WNMU scoreless the rest of the way. A jumper by Madi Greenwood sparked a 16-0 run to close out the quarter. Keanna Kelly and Blount each hit a 3-pointer during the opening quarter to give the Belles a 20-3 advantage after one quarter.

WNMU opened the second quarter with a 7-2 run to cut the ASU deficit to 12 but it would be as close as the Mustangs would get. The Belles responded with a 15-7 run as Moore scored five of the 15 points during the run to push ASU's lead to 36-17 with 1:41 to go. Angelo State took a 50-22 advantage into the break after Blount was fouled on a 3-pointer with 25 seconds left and hit all three free throws.

ASU took its largest lead of the game in the third quarter on a Marquita Daniels layup. The layup capped off a 9-3 run to make it 51-25 with 6:22 left in the quarter. Moments later WNMU cut the deficit down to 16 but four straight points from Gray made it 57-25 after three.

Daniels opened the fourth with a 3-pointer and the two teams traded buckets throughout the quarter. A layup by Kynese Davis with 1:56 remaining gave ASU its biggest lead of the fourth at 72-47 before the final of 74-52.

Angelo State returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 2 pm. MST / 3 p.m. CST against Eastern New Mexico in Portales, New Mexico.
