Belles Fall at Tarleton State

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Angelo State women's basketball team dropped a 72-56 Lone Star Conference game to Tarleton State in Stephenville on Thursday night.

The Belles (8-3, 3-2 LSC) were limited to just 27.2 percent from the field in the first half and committed a total of 22 turnovers. The TexAnns (8-5, 2-3 LSC) hit 10 three pointers and received 31 points from its bench. TSU also scored 19 points off the 22 ASU turnovers and hit 19 second chance points.

Dee Moore led all scorers with 15 points. Deziare Hampton and Marquita Daniels each chipped in 11 points while Hampton also grabbed eight rebounds. Daniels dished out five assists and made four steals. Ekiya Gray grabbed a career high 12 rebounds and added nine points.

The Belles struggled in the first quarter shooting only 23.1 percent from the field and didn't score until the 5:59 mark of the first quarter with a pair of Greenwood free throws. The TexAnns built a seven point lead at 13-6 but free throws by Daniels sparked a 5-0 run. Hampton capped it off with a layup to make it 13-11 with 2:04 left. TSU ended the quarter on an 8-3 run to build a 21-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Ekiya Gray opened the quarter with a layup but six straight TSU put the Belles down 27-16. Hampton would score five of the next seven points highlighted by a 3-pointer that trimmed the TSU lead to just 27-23 with 7:14 to go in the second quarter. ASU would go scoreless over the final 7:14 while the TexAnns scored 11 straight points to take a 38-23 advantage into the break.

The Belles came out in the second half and cut the TexAnns lead down to 12 at 46-34 with 4:15. Greenwood hit a 3-pointer and Moore hit two layups during the run. TSU continued to lead by double-digits and were up 58-39 after three quarters. Angelo State hit 51.8 percent from the field in the second half.

ASU would outscore Tarleton State in the fourth quarter 17-14 but it wouldn't be enough to comeback from the deficit. Gray scored five of her nine points in the fourth quarter. The Belles

The Belles will return to action on Saturday against Texas A&M-Commerce in Commerce at 2 p.m. The game will be carried locally on 1260AM KKSA with Jeremy Bryant on the call.
