Belle volleyball ends season at South Central Regional

STEPHENVILLE - The Angelo State volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss to Texas A&M-Commerce Thursday, ending their 2018 season in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Belles finish the season with a 22-10 record after placing third in the LSC and reaching the NCAA Postseason Tournament for the eighth straight season.

Thursday marked the third time this season that the two teams had faced off, with each team having one win. The match started back-and-forth with the Belles up 5-4 early.

ASU held onto the lead for half of the set, before a five-point run put TAMUC up 16-12. Angelo State would not pull closer than two points the rest of the set as the Lions came away with a 25-19 win.

Set two was back and forth to start out again as the two teams traded points to an 8-8 tie. This time, however, the Belles went on the run, scoring six of the next seven points for a 14-9 advantage.

Angelo State led the rest of the way, using two more short runs to close out the second set 25-14 on a service ace from Morgan Preston.

In the third set, Texas A&M-Commerce took over to start, going up 7-3 before ASU came back to tie it up at seven-all. A four-point ASU run put the Belles up 11-8, but TAMUC responded with a 6-1 run of their own to go back in front. The Lions ended the set with eight straight points to re-take a 2-1 lead.

Angelo State took the early lead in the fourth set at 7-4, but Texas A&M-Commerce got back in and tied things up at 9-9. Another six-point Lion run gave them the lead, but ASU got back in front with a 7-1 run and had a 22-19 lead.

The Lions closed strong again though, scoring six of the match's final seven points and moving onto the next round with a 3-1 win.

Senior Audrey Fragniere led the team in kills with 12, and Chloe Robinson notched 16 digs in the match.
