Belles remain undefeated, defeat TAMUC 70-64 to begin conference play

COMMERCE – The Angelo State women's basketball team got off to a hot start and defeated Texas A&M-Commerce on the road Thursday afternoon to improve to 3-0 (1-0 Lone Star Conference) on the season.

Senior guard Marquita Daniels led the way with 23 points, five rebounds, three assists, and seven steals on the afternoon, including a huge three pointer to push the lead to four after TAMUC had cut the lead to one in the fourth quarter.

De'Anira Moore and Asia Davis joined Daniels in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively, and Dezirae Hampton had eight, along with three steals on the first three possessions of the game.

ASU got off to a quick start, leading 24-14 at the end of the first quarter, and seemed well on their way to cruising to victory. However. Commerce slowed the pace down dramatically in the second quarter, holding the Belles to just seven points and closing the gap to six at the halftime break.

Coming out of the halftime break, Commerce closed to within one possession repeatedly, but the Belles refused to fold. This continued into the fourth quarter as TAMUC closed to within one point, but the Belles held strong and hit free throws down the stretch for the wire to wire victory.

The six point victory occurred despite being outrebounded 50-35 by the Lions. However, the Belles turned 20 TAMUC turnovers into 27 points, which ultimately made the difference in the game. Additionally, the Belles hit seven three pointers to three for the Lions, two of which game in the final two minutes of the contest.

The Belles will look to remain undefeated and move to 2-0 in Lone Star Conference play Saturday afternoon as they travel to Tarleton State. The Belles have not defeated Tarleton State on the road since February 4, 2006, when they recorded an 83-76 overtime victory over the TexAnns.
