SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State baseball team earned a 10-1 win on Sunday afternoon at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium to earn a series win against Southwestern Oklahoma State.
The Rams (6-1) scored 10 runs on 10 hits in the matchup and capitalized on a pair of errors from the Bulldogs (3-4) in the victory.
"We were really able to capitalize and take advantage of some mistakes they made early in the big inning," Head Angelo State baseball coach Kevin Brooks said. "I thought our hitters really used the whole field today and Shane Browning gave us a really good outing, so it was a solid day that we can build on."
Shane Browning took the mound in the series finale for the Rams and started out got three quick outs on 12 pitches to start out the game, setting a strong tone for his outing."
Shortstop Nicholas Novak got on to start the bottom of the first inning and quickly swiped second base, but the Rams were unable to bring him into score.
In the second inning, however, ASU took the lead and took it for good. First basemen Andrew Morales reached base to start the inning on a SWOSU error and Michael Urquidi followed with a single. Designated hitter Brad Mathiowetz laid down a bunt next to advance both runners, but ended up reaching base himself as well as SWOSU committed another error, scoring Morales.
The next three Ram batters reached as well and ASU ended up bringing six runs in during the inning, five of which were unearned.
SWOSU scratched across their only run of the game in the bottom half of the third, capitalizing on an error from Morales to score before center fielder Elias Aguirre made a sliding catch to get the Rams out of the inning.
The run was unearned and was the only one allowed by Browning all day. The Lubbock native pitched six full innings in the game, scattering five hits and striking out six batters in that time. He is now 2-0 o the year.
Angelo State went scoreless in the fourth, but added a run in the fourth inning. Novak walked to start the inning and stole second for his second time in the game. One batter later, Mitch Henshaw came to the plate a drove a single into center field to plate Novak.
The RBI was the third of the day for Henshaw, who had a pair of singles in his third start of the year.
In the fifth inning, ASU tacked on once again with a pair of runs. With one out, Bradley Mathiowetz doubled down the right field line and Jonathan Soberanes quickly brought him home by singling on the first pitch he saw.
Soberanes got himself home in just three pitches, stealing second and then third before scoring on a wild pitch with catcher Alex Salcido at the plate. Soberanes had three stolen bases in the game, bringing his season total to seven.
The Rams' final run came in the bottom of the seventh inning as defensive substitute Parker Bramlett worked a walk to start the inning and Mathiowetz also worked a walk one batter later. Infielder Trevor Moses then came to the plate for the first time in his ASU career and quickly singled home Bramlett for his first career hit and RBI.
Reliever Josh Barnett followed Browning on the bump for the Rams, allowing the bases to get loaded before working back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.
Left-hander Shannon Broussard pitched the final two innings and allowed just one baserunner to complete the 10-1 win for Angelo State.
The Rams will be on the road next, taking on Lubbock Christian in a three-game series Friday through Sunday in Lubbock.
