Rams Fall to Buffs in Canyon

CANYON, Texas - The Angelo State men's basketball was defeated, 120 -88, by West Texas A&M on the road Saturday evening.

Despite having four players sink double-digits, the Rams slid to 17-9 overall and 8-8 in the conference with the loss. Daron Mims headed the offensive scoring with a 22-point showing that not only marked a season high, but also his second 20-point game of the season. Brandon Williams (18), Ja'Michael Brown (15) and James Kirksey (10) completed the group. The Angelo State offense also led in second chance points (19-16) and points in the paint (52-38).

Defensively, the Rams pulled down 31 total boards, while Kirksey lead the team with six. The junior also pocketed a squad most four steals on the night. With the win, the Buffs move to 24-2, 14-2 LSC.

Early shots from Williams and Kirksey kept ASU close until an 11-2 Buffs run at the 14:54 mark allowed WTAMU to push its lead into the double-digit range. A layup by Davion Cole-Johnson followed by a William Tchiengang jumper with 10:48 left in the half would briefly halt the Buffs advance. However, WTAMU would continue to increase its lead.

At the 2:46 mark, DeVaughn Jenkins would grab and offensive rebound and rolled in a layup. He then immediately dropped in a second layup to head a 12-2 Rams run that closed out the half. The run, which was the largest in the half for ASU, saw a pair of 3-balls, which were sunk by Mims and Antonio Singleton.

In the second half, WTAMU would continue to build upon its lead, until Mims took the ball on a fastbreak at the 15:56 mark and dropped in another layup. This was quickly followed by a strong Kirksey dunk and another layup from Williams. After a Buffs layup and trip to the charity stripe, Brown and Mims would knock down back-to-back shots to complete ASU's 10-3 run.

Less than a minute ticked off the clock, before Will Adler made his presence known as he took the rock inside for his first points of the game. The Rams would continue to work to contain the Buffs, but WTAMU would prove to be too much in the end. Adler would close out the scoring for Angelo State with 43 seconds left in the game as he hit a deep 3-pointer.

Angelo State returns home for its final regular season games, as it will face Eastern New Mexico on Thursday, February 22 at 7:30 p.m. and then Western New Mexico on Saturday, February 24 at 4 p.m. The Rams will also look to celebrate its senior class prior to its Saturday matchup with WNMU.
