ARKADELPHIA, Arkansas - The Angelo State tennis team split a pair of matches on day one of the Ouachita Baptist Team Tournament, losing to Mississippi College 8-1 before defeating Ouachita Baptist 9-0.
The Belles (3-2) earned their first dual match win over a Division II opponent of the season with the win over Ouachita Baptist, sweeping the Tigers for all nine points.
ASU started the day against Midland College, however, and the Belles got in an early hole in doubles competition.
On court one, Maria Delgadillo and Ena Ovcina lost 8-2, while Zoë Gubbles  and Lucie Maitrot also fell 8-3 on court two.
Yasmine Ansari and Virginie Becht played the closest doubles match of the morning but came up just short, losing 8-5 on court three.
In singles, Delgadillo earned the only Belle point of the match, defeating Nicole Bueno 6-4, 6-3 on court two. Ovcina also played a close match on court one, but fell 6-3, 6-4.
Ansari was defeated 6-2, 6-1 and Gubbels lost 6-3, 6-2. Becht and Maitrot finished the match by playing pro sets, with Becht lost 8-1 and Maitrot fell 8-0.
Angelo State fared much better in their second match of the day, taking down Ouachita Baptist 9-0.
The Belles had a strong start to the match in the doubles portion, with Ovcina/Delgadillo winning 8-2 on court one. The other two doubles matches saw ASU win in sweeping fashion, as Gubbels/Maitrot and Becht/Ansari won 8-0.
Melanie Dreux was the first Belle to get going in singles competition and jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in her first set and eventually won a pair of 6-0 sets on court six.
Ovcina also started out with a 6-0 win in her first set and finished off a court one win with a 6-1 second set. Delgadillo earned a win on court two, 6-2 and 6-0 and Ansari one 6-1, 6-1.
Becht and Maitrot finished off the sweep once again with pro sets on their respective courts, with Becht winning 8-0 and Maitrot earning an 8-1 victory.
The Belles will play one more match in the Ouachita Baptist Team tournament, facing Henderson State at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Â
