Belles Clinch Share of LSC Championship with 86-31 Win Over WNMU on Senior Day

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team clinched a share of the program's sixth Lone Star Conference Championship with an 86-31 win over Western New Mexico on Saturday at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.

The Belles finish the regular season with a 21-5 overall record and 16-4 LSC record. It is the first time ASU has won consecutive LSC titles since the 2004-05 season and it is just the second time the program history to have won at least 20 games in a season in three straight years.

Angelo State will enter the Lone Star Conference Tournament held at Dr Pepper Arena in Frisco as the No. 1 seed. ASU will face Texas Woman's

ASU held the Mustangs (1-27, 1-19 LSC) to just 31 points on 18.2 percent shooting. The Belles were able to score 48 points in the paint and turned 20 turnovers into 25 points. The Mustangs were held to single digits in three of the four quarters.

All five starters were in double figures led by Dezirae Hampton double-double. The junior finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Ten of her 10 rebounds were on the defensive end. Keanna Kelly scored 17 points with four 3-pointers and grabbed seven rebounds in her final home game of her career. Fellow senior Madi Greenwood finish with 14 poitns and four 3-pointers and Marquita Daniels added 12 points, seven assists and six steals. Daniels is five steals away from breaking the ASU record for steals in a single season. Senior Ekiya Gray chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds.

WNMU scored the first basket of the game and after that it was all ASU. Up 9-4 at the 6:22 mark of the first quarter, Greenwood hit one of her four 3-pointers to spark an 11-2 run to close out the quarter at 20-6.

ASU opened the second quarter on the same pace as the first. Daniels made a layup to start a 12-2 run over the first four minutes of the second quarter. Hampton scored seven consecutive points during the run to push the lead to 28 at 36-8. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter as the Belles took a 42-16 advantage in at the half.

Another run started the third quarter for the Belles. A 23-3 run highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers from Greenwood increased the sizeable lead to 45 at 65-20 over the first eight minutes of the third quarter. WNMU responded with a 3-pointer but ASU would score the final four points of the quarter for a 69-23 lead after three quarters.

The Belles pushed the lead to 60 with back-to-back 3-pointers from Kelly. Greenwood would join the 3-pointer party with her fourth of the game. ASU would hang on for the 55 point win after a Hampton layup made the final 86-31.

ASU will now focus toward the Lone Star Conference Championship Tournament starting on Thursday, March 1 at 8:30 p.m. against Texas Woman's.
