FORT WORTH - The Angelo State tennis team won it second straight match to open the 2018 season, defeating Texas Weslyan 9-0 in Forth Worth.
The Belles (2-0) will now return to San Angelo for the first tennis match on campus in more than 30 years. The Belles will take on St. Edward's at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the ASU Tennis Complex.
ASU started the match with Texas Weslyan by sweeping all three doubles matches. The pairing of
Maria Delgadillo and
Ena Ovcina had the strongest showing, sweeping their match 8-0. Zoe Gubbels and
Lucie Maitrot then got a win of their own 8-3 and
Virginie Becht and
Melanie Dreux finished off the sweep with an 8-4 win in their match.
Ovcina continued her strong showing as the Belles moved onto the singles portion of the match, winning two straight sets 6-0 and 6-0 over Ashton Willis. Both
Melanie Dreux and Zoe Gubbels also won their singles matches without dropping a game as well, beating Mae Covacevich and Emily Rodriguez, respectively.
Maria Delgadillo earned a win 6-1, 6-0 against Maggie Brasher, and
Virginie Becht also got a 6-1, 6-0 win against Sydney Rodriguez.
Lucie Maitrot completed the 9-0 victory for ASU by defeating Laura Grunden 6-1, 6-2.
Admission to the Belles' next match on Saturday is free and food will also be provided to fans in attendance with breakfast burritos before the match and pizza for lunch. Following the completion of the match, fans are welcomed to take part in a community play day and get on the court with members of the team.
