No. 4 Rambelles Split Doubleheader with St. Mary's

SAN ANTONIO – The No. 4 Angelo State softball team earned a split with St. Mary's winning the night cap 8-4 after falling in the first game 3-0 in San Antonio on Monday night.

The Rambelles (25-2) had their 23 game win streak snapped and are 4-1 on the road.  The Rattlers (20-7) were able to hold ASU to just two hits in the first game but gave up eight runs on 15 hits in game two.

"It was a good bounce back in game two after dropping the first one," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "It was two quality teams and we needed the tough environment on the road. We had our chances in game one and they made some plays and credit to St. Mary's for taking advantage. We were able to bounce back with four runs in the first two innings of game two. We were able to compete and put a bunch of hits together and Brandy (Marlett) competed well. It was good preparation for this weekend's series and we need to be ready to have a good weekend."

After dropping the first game, the Rambelles wasted little time getting on the board. Back-to-back singled from Madison Greenwell and Bailey Wallace started the game. Taegan Kirk hit a two-RBI single to right field for the 2-0 advantage.

The duo of Greenwell and Wallace created offense again in the second. Wallace singled up the middle to plate Brooke Mangold from second and Greenwell was able to score on a RBI single from Karina Rocha to increase the lead to 4-0.

Brandy Marlett started game two and limited St. Mary's to one run on two hits.

The Rattlers were able to tie the game in the fourth with three runs on three hits including a two run home run.

ASU answered in a big way in the fifth. Jade Strother hit a RBI double to left center to score pinch runner Meagan Hill. Greenwell reached on a throwing error that allowed Bina to score and Wallace followed it up with a two-RBI single to right field to make it 8-4.

Marlett took care of the rest by not allowing a hit in the final three innings of the game. The senior improved to 12-0 on the year with the complete game. She struck out five while giving up four runs on five hits.

The Rambelles 23-game win streak ended as St. Mary's limited ASU to just two hits in the first game.

The Rattlers scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the first. An error kept the inning alive and Brenda Iparraguirre made it costly with a two-run home run.

After allowing two unearned runs on four hits in the first two innings, Morgan Hill would not allow another until the sixth inning.

The Rambelles had opportunities and they started in the fourth. Greenwell singled for ASU's first hit of the game and tried to score on a single. The senior was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the inning.

Courtney Barnhill nearly cut the deficit in half in the fifth but the fly ball was caught at the fence. Jade Strother sent a ball down the first base line that the Rattler first baseman snagged at the last second with Bina at second base.

With Mangold of first, Greenwell hit a liner the second baseman was able to catch and double up Mangold to end the threat in the sixth.

St. Mary's added a solo home run in the sixth for the final 3-0 victory.

It is just Morgan Hill's second loss of the season. The senior gave up three runs, one earned, on five hits and struck out three.

The Rambelles now will head to Canyon to face West Texas A&M for a three-game LSC series starting on Friday, March 16 at 6 p.m.
