No. 4 Rambelles Come From Behind to Take Series from No. 15 West Texas A&M

CANYON, Texas – The No. 4 Angelo State softball team secured a series win over No. 15 West Texas A&M by coming from behind in the series finale winning 4-3 in eight innings after falling 8-2 in the second game in Canyon on Saturday afternoon.

The Rambelles improve to 27-3 overall and 11-1 in the LSC. It is the first series win in Canyon for Angelo State since 2009. The Lady Buffs 23-5 overall and 6-3 in the LSC.

"I'm so proud of the way this team fought and battled to come from behind against a great team in West Texas A&M," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "We showed a lot of resiliency and guts to come from behind on the road in that type of environment."

Angelo State was trailing 3-1 and down to its final out as Taegan Kirk stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. The roles were reversed on Friday night and ASU was able to put the game away with a ground ball that Danae Bina tossed to second. Kirk hit a grounder between the first and second baseman and beat a delayed throw. The delay allowed Danae Bina and Brooke Mangold to score and tie the game.

Brandy Marlett, who came in relief for starter Morgan Hill, worked around a leadoff single to send the game to extra innings.

Jade Strother sat at first after reaching on a fielder's choice in the top of the eighth. Bina crushed a ball off the left center fence that allowed Strother to score from first. The senior used her speed to cruise into third as ASU took a 4-3 advantage.

The Rambelles still had work to do in the bottom of the eighth. Runners were on first and second and a ball was hit back to Marlett. The senior turned around and threw the runner out at second for the second out of the inning. With the tying run sitting at third base, Marlett got WT's Stevie McLemore to fly out to left field to secure the series win.

Marlett picked up the win pitching 2.2 innings and only allowing one hit and no runs. Morgan Hill started the game and went 5.1 innings giving up three runs on 10 hits.

West Texas A&M took the second game of the series 8-2.

The Lady Buffs took a 1-0 lead after the first inning but Madison Greenwell tied it up in the third. The senior hit a ball over the left center fence for a solo home run. It is her second home run of the year and third of her career.

WT added two runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth off Marlett to make it 5-1. ASU tried to answer in the sixth with a RBI single from Strother to make it 5-2.

The Lady Buffs added three runs off reliever Meagan Hill to make the final 8-2. Marlett picked up her first loss of the season giving up seven runs on seven hits. The senior did tie her season high for strikeouts with 10.

The Rambelles will return to the field for a three-game LSC series against Texas Woman's on Friday, March 23 in Denton.
