SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State tennis team suffered a 7-2 loss at the hands of No. 7 St. Mary's Friday morning at the ASU Tennis Courts.
The Belles (4-3) took one of the three doubles points in the match and also got a singles win on court six from Virginie Becht.
In the doubles portion of the match, Zoe Gubbels and Lucie Maitrot jumped out to an early 4-1 lead on court two and carried the momentum all the way through the match to win 8-4.
On court one, Ena Ovcina and Maria Delgadillo went down 0-3 early, but fought back to within 4-6. St. Mary's finished off the win 8-5 for their first point of the day.
The court three match was close as well, with Becht and Yasmine Ansari fighting to an early 3-3 tie, but the Rattlers took the momentum and finished off their second doubles win 8-4. The Belles went into the singles portion down 2-1.
Becht responded well after her doubles loss, getting the only win of the day for ASU in singles. The Florida native went up 3-2 early in the first set and finished strong with a 6-2 win before taking set two 6-4.
Delgadillo fought hard for another point on court two but came up just short. In set one, she won 7-6, but lost 6-7 in the second set to force a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker went to St. Mary's as Delgadillo fell 7-10.
On court three, Ansari took an early 3-0 lead but ended up losing 5-7 and 4-6.
Ovcina lost on court one 3-6 and 0-6, while Maitrot fell on court five 4-6, 1-6 and Gubbels lost her court four match 2-6, 4-6.
The Belles will now hit the road for Dallas, where they will face Dallas Baptist at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
