SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State tennis team will play a pair of conference matches this weekend, facing Cameron at home at 1 p.m. on Thursday before taking on Western New Mexico at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The Belles are currently 11-5 overall with an 0-1 record in Lone Star Conference play. They have won seven of their last 10 matches.
Sophomore Maria Delgadillo leads the team with a 12-3 record and singles. Her performance in singles earned her the No. 58 spot in all of Division II women's tennis from the ITA/Oracle rankings.
The Mexico City native has also performed well in doubles this year, posting an 8-8 record on court one with her partner Ena Ovcina. The two were ranked in the top 50 doubles rankings in Division II last week, but dropped out this week.
Ovcina has had a good season as well in singles play, competing solely on court one for ASU. She has a 10-5 record there.
Zoe Gubbels is tied for the best record in singles play with Delgadillo at 12-3. She has played mostly on court four, where she is 9-4, but is also 3-0 on court three. Gubbels is currently riding a nine-match win streak in singles play.
Both Virginie Becht and Lucie Maitrot have also already reached the double-digit win mark in singles play this spring. Becht is 11-4, splitting time between courts four, five and six, while Maitrot also has an 11-4 record on courts five and six.
The Belles have also gotten contributions from Melanie Dreux, who is 5-1 this season in singles when filling in on court six.
Cameron comes into Thursday's match with a 9-4 record and will be playing its first LSC match of the season against the Belles.
Western New Mexico is currently 2-11 on the season and lost to MSU-Denver 9-0 last week just two day before the Belles beat MSU-Denver 5-4.
