SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State tennis team notched its first Lone Star Conference win of the season in dramatic fashion Thursday afternoon, upsetting No. 17 Cameron 5-4.
The Belles are now 12-5 on the season an 1-1 in LSC play. The have won four straight matches.
Starting in doubles play, ASU fought hard and took one of the three points available. The one win came on court two as the new pairing of Zoe Gubbels and Virginie Becht won 9-8 in a tiebreaker set.
The court one doubles match also went to a tiebreaker set as Ena Ovcina and Maria Delgadillo battled back from 3-0 and 5-3 deficits to force the extra set. The No. 15 Cameron pairing finished out the win, however, taking the tiebreaker 7-3.
Angelo State also dropped the doubles point on court three, where Yasmine Ansari and Lucie Maitrot lost 8-3 to but ASU down 2-1.
Singles play is where the Belles made their comeback.
Court one finished first, as Ovcina upset the No. 18 player in Division II Women's tennis. Ovcina lost the first set of the match 3-6 but got wins in the next two 6-3,6-3. In the final set, she got down 3-0 early before winning six straight games to take the point.
Delgadillo also dropped the first set on court two but came back to take the point. After a 4-6 set one loss, the Mexico City native won 6-1 in set two and 7-6 in set three.
Cameron took the point on court three as Ansari fell 6-4, 6-0, and the Aggies also took the point on court six. Maitrot lost 6-2, 6-2 on that court.
The two singles losses tied the match at 4-4 and left the win up to Gubbels as she took on Melany Opolz on court four. Gubbels won the first set 6-3 but dropped the second set 5-7. The third set came down to the wire, as Gubbels and Opolz battled to a 6-6 tie to force a tiebreaker for the match win, which Gubbles won to clinch the victory.
Angelo State will now hit the road, playing an exhibition against UTEP on Friday before facing Western New Mexico in Silver City on Saturday.
