KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Angelo State baseball team dropped game one of the series against Texas A&M-Kingsville Friday night 16-2.
The Rams (26-10, 6-3LSC) got just four hits against the Javelinas while committing three errors in their second run-rule loss of the season.
"We got absolutely embarrassed out there today, so we're really going to find out about the character of this team now," Angelo State head baseball coach Kevin Brooks said. "They're guy on the mound tonight pitched really well, but I don't think anyone should strike us out 12 times in seven innings. Hopefully we come back tomorrow and have this fresh on our minds still and respond the right way."
ASU started Tyler Lesley on the mound again, but the San Antonio native would end up with his shortest outing of the 2018 season at 3.2 innings.
Neither team scored in the first inning, but the Javelinas jumped out in front in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs.
The Rams were able to respond with a run in the top of the third inning, as Michael Urquidi worked a one-out walk and put himself in scoring position by swiping second base. Nicholas Novak then drove Urquidi in with a single to cut the TAMUK lead in half.
Texas A&M-Kingsville was held scoreless in the bottom of the third, but began widening their lead in the fifth inning with another four runs. Lesley was removed from the game in the inning for Jared Velasco, but Lesley was saddled with the loss. It is just the second time the Rams have lost a game that Lesley started.
ASU cut into the lead one final time in the top of the sixth inning as Bradley Mathiowetz blasted his third home run of the season, but the Rams were unable to do any further damage.
The Javelinas broke the game open in the bottom half of the sixth, as the first two batters reached on a hit-by-pitch and a walk. TAMUK went on to score 10 runs on just six hits before the inning was over for a 16-2 lead.
Freshman pitcher Tyler Flores finished off the game he started for the Javelinas, striking out all three batters that came to the plate to complete the victory.
The Rams will have three more chances against the Javelinas this weekend, playing a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. before the series finale at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Â
