SALEM, Virginia – The No. 6 Angelo State softball team won a pitcher's duel over West Chester 1-0 to advance to face Southern Indiana on Friday, May 25 at 11 a.m. EST / 10 a.m. CST at the Division II College Softball World Series held at the James I Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Virginia.
The Rambelles (53-7) is now 6-0 in opening round games of the Division II College Softball World Series. ASU was able to record six hits while limiting the Golden Rams (45-14) to just one hit and one baserunner.
"It was a heck of a pitcher's duel," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "Everybody saw why those two are All-Americans. Brandy (Marlett) almost had a no-hitter if we make a play on that one ball but had some miscommunication. She had great command and we needed it because Amanda (Houck) threw a heck of the game. We were finally able to get to her and scratch a run across. Our pitching and defense was able to do the rest."
The game was a pitching duel as Brandy Marlett and Amanda Houck only allowed one hit for the first three innings.
ASU put runners on first and second but a double play ended the threat in the second.
The Golden Rams only base runner of the game came on a bloop single in the second inning that fell between three players. It would be the only baserunner Marlett would allow. Taegan Kirk made short work of the baserunner picking off the runner at first. Marlett would strike out the next two batters to end the inning.
The Rambelles had an opportunity in the fourth but couldn't convert.
It wasn't until the fifth that ASU was able to get a run. Danae Bina was hit by a pitch and Mykayla Stroud laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Bina to second. Brooke Mangold brought her home with a single up the middle for the RBI.
After the WCU hit, Marlett would sit down 17 straight batters with seven strikeouts to keep West Chester off the board including a strikeout to end the game. Marlett improves to 25-3 overall in facing the minimum.
Angelo State will be the visitor tomorrow in their first matchup against Southern Indiana. Both of the teams were participants in last year's Division II College Softball World Series. Â
