Osakue finishes fifth at European Athletics Championships

BERLIN – Angelo State junior Daisy Osakue finished fifth in the discus at the European Athletics Championships with a mark of 59.32 meters on Saturday at Olympic Stadium. Osakue, who is representing her home country of Italy this summer, qualified for the finals with a throw of 192'-8" (58.73) last Thursday before improving her mark to 194'-7.5" (59.32-meters) in the finals for the impressive top-5 finish.

"I am extremely happy for my fifth place at the European Championship," Osakue said. "Words can't describe how I feel. I still can't believe that I actually managed to get that result. I loved the support of my Ram Fam and mostly coach Nathan Janusey. He helped me out during the season in the USA and in Italy, creating a great bond with my Italian coach Maria Marello. I can't wait to be back in San Angelo and prepare for 2019 with all my teammates."

Osakue won the NCAA Division II National Discus Championship last season for the Rambelles with a distance of 59.15 meters in Charlotte, North Carolina to finish her second season at ASU. A Turin, Italy native, Osakue won five discus throw events last season as a sophomore for ASU including the Angelo State David Noble Relays where she had a career-best distance of 59.72. Along with her national championship, Osakue won the Lone Star Conference discus title for the second straight season.

Sandra Perkovic (Croatia) won the European Athletics Championships with a throw of 67.62 meters, followed by Germany's Nadine Muller (63.00), Shanice Craft (62.46), Claudine Vita (61.25) and Osakue who hit 59.32 meters on her fifth of six attempts.
