CANYON, Texas – The No. 25 Angelo State University football team squeaked out a victory over West Texas A&M on Saturday night, 17-14.
The Rams improve to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the Lone Star Conference.
In Case You Missed It:
- ASU's momentum started hot, as Deldric Shields placed Angelo State in great field position, rushing for a career-long 83-yard kickoff return.
- Willis Patrick rushed for his first collegiate touchdown to put the Rams on the board and lead 7-0 in the first three minutes of the game.
- In the final two minutes of the first half, Connor Flanigan kicked a 34-yard field goal to put the Rams up at the half, 10-0.
- Angelo State showed complete domination in the first half, totaling 183 yards on offense to 42 yards on offense by West Texas A&M.
- The Buffaloes came alive in the third quarter, scoring quick in the first four minutes to cut the Rams' lead to 10-7.
- In the final minute of the third quarter, West Texas marched down the field to claim their first lead of the game on a 21-yard pass to lead 14-10. However, the Rams answered back, with Payne Sullins airing it out to Austin Landry for a 67-yard touchdown pass to give the lead back to ASU and to end the third quarter, 17-14.
- Late in the fourth quarter, West Texas A&M threatened a comeback but a penalty called back a touchdown which would have given the Buffaloes the lead. They attempted a field goal to tie the game but missed giving the Rams the ball back with 5:26 remaining in the game.
- West Texas A&M missed a last second field goal from 22-yards out to tie the game and gave the Rams the 17-14 victory.
Key Players:
- Manning led the run game with 21 attempts for 60 yards.
- Chism led the receivers with four receptions and 38 yards, while Manning had four receptions for 15 yards. Landry caught a season-long 67-yard pass and finished with 81 yards on the night on three receptions.
- Sullins threw for 159 yards with one touchdown.
