No. 23 Rams travel to No. 4 Tarleton

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 23 Angelo State University football team heads to No. 4 Tarleton State University on Saturday, October 5 in Stephenville, Texas. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The Game
Angelo State travels to Tarleton State on Saturday. ASU trails in the all-time series, 19-16. The last meeting between these two teams was in 2018 in San Angelo with the Texans coming out with the victory, 54-33. Payne Sullins aired it out, throwing for 363 yards on 26 completions with two touchdowns. Lawson Ayo totaled 134 yards on seven receptions, while Keke Chism was right behind with 127 yards on 12 receptions. Since 2006, the Rams are 2-8 against the Texans with their last victory in 2015, defeating TSU 57-24.
 
Tarleton State
The Texans enter the weekend undefeated (4-0, 2-0 LSC), as well. TSU currently sits No. 4 in the national rankings. Last weekend, the Texans played the University of Texas - Permian Basin, defeating the Falcons, 49-7. Zimari Manning broke the school receiving record with 257 yards on seven catches with three touchdowns. Daniel McCants rushed for 135 yards on 17 attempts. Ben Holmes threw for 344 yards and three touchdowns with 14 completions on 21 attempts.
 
Last Time Out
The Rams hosted No. 14 Midwestern State this past Saturday and upset the Mustangs, 28-6, and pushed MSU out of the rankings. The Rams held the Mustangs to a shutout until the final two minutes of the game when MSU found the end zone. Keke Chism ended the game with 123 yards on six receptions with two touchdowns. Josh Quinton led the defense with one interception, one fumble recovery, seven tackles, and two sacks for a loss of 19 yards.
 
National Rankings
The Rams burst into the national rankings with the upset over Midwestern State to knock the Mustangs completely out. The Rams enter the rankings at No. 23. The last time the Blue and Gold were ranked was back in the 2015 season. Angelo State started in the No. 6 spot at the beginning of the season and dropped down to No. 23-25 towards the end of the season.
 
Stout Offense
The Rams offense has been on fire to start the season, totaling 1,816 yards through four games. They are averaging 46.2 points per game against 10.0 for the opponent. The offense averages 454.0 yards a game and averages 6.2 yards a play. When in the red zone, the Rams score 95 percent (19-20) of the time. They are 80 percent (16-20) with touchdowns from the red zone.

Ram 'Em
the Angelo State defense has been stellar and ranks second in conference for red zone defense, holding opponents to an average of 10.0 points a game. The Rams rank first in the conference and fifth in the nation for sacks with an average of four a game. The defense has allowed only 40 points through four games. They have shut out opponents in the second quarter (65-0) and have only allowed seven points total through the first half.
