Belles Defeat TSU To Win LSC Championship

COMMERCE, Texas – the Angelo State University Belles defeated the Tarleton State Texans in five sets to claim their tenth Lone Star Conference Championship Title in school history.
The Belles are now 28-2 overall.
 
In Case You Missed It:
  • With Makenna Hanssen to serve for the Belles, and kills from Bailey Drum, Angelo State jumped quickly to a 5-1 lead in set one.
  • Tarleton quickly responded to ASU's lead and quickly claimed five points to claim the lead from ASU at 7-6.
  • Two more kills from Drum reclaimed the lead for the Belles, 14-13.
  • ASU and TSU traded points back and forth, fighting for each and every point they earned, until Meghan Parker came to serve for the Belles. Parker, along with ball handling errors from Tarleton State, brought Angelo State to a 21-19 lead over the Texans.
  • A kill from Kailyn Gilbreath ended set one for the Belles, 25-21.
 
  • The Texans responded quickly to take an early 3-1 over the Belles in set two.
  • A block from Sundara Chinn and Baleigh Allen brought ASU to tie with the Texans at 6-6.
  • Kills from Tarleton State and errors from the Belles gave TSU a five point lead over ASU, 16-11.
  • The Texans quickly gained control of set two to score four quick kills to bring their lead to eight points over Angelo State, 21-13.
  • ASU attempted a comeback to bring their score to 18, but the Texans ended set two in their favor, 25-18.
 
  • Tarleton maintained their momentum from the previous set to run into a 4-2 lead over the Belles in set three.
  • Kills from several of Tarleton States players brought their lead to 8-4 over the Blue and Gold.
  • Multiple kills from the Texans and several errors from ASU brought the Texans lead to seven points, 15-8.
  • Errors from TSU and Hanssens serving abilities cut the Texans lead to just four points, 16-12.
  • Kills from Tarleton State brought their lead once again back to seven, 22-15.
  • Kills from Allen and a service ace from Gilbreath brought ASU within four points again, 22-14.
  • A service error ended the third set for the Texans, 25-21.
 
  • Angelo State started set four off with a vengeance as they quickly fought to a 4-2 lead over the Texans.
  • Lindsey Ledyard served for nine straight serves, along with kills from Gilbreath, Allen, and attack errors from Tarleton State, brought Angelo State to a 14-4 lead over the Texans.
  • Gilbreaths serving abilities showed her skill as she served for three straight points to bring ASU to an 11 point lead over TSU, 19-8.
  • A kill from Sundara Chinn ended set four for the Belles, 25-11.
 
  • Haley Coulter kept the Belles momentum going from the previous set, serving for seven straight serves to bring the Belles to an 8-1 lead over Tarleton State in set five.
  • Multiple errors from TSU, and kills from Gilbreath and Makenzie Griffin, extended the Blue and Golds lead to 12-7.
  • A serve from Gilbreath, an assist from Ledyard, and the kill from Chinn ended set five, and the match, for the Belles, 15-8.
 
Key Players:
  • Kailyn Gilbreath led the Belles offense into the match against the Texans defense, registering 15 kills, while Baleigh Allen and Sundara Chinn followed closely behind with nine kills each.
  • Meghan Parker and Lindsey Ledyard combined showed their skills as versatile players, registering 46 assists between the two of them, Parker registering 24 and Ledyard registering 22. Parker also registered nine digs, while Ledyard registered 10 digs.
  • Makenna Hanssen led the Belles defense against Tarletons offense, registering 24 digs, while Haley Coulter and Lindsey Ledyard both registered 10 digs each.
 
Several players from ASU were selected to the LSC Championship All-Tournament Team. They include sophomore Defensive Specialist Makenna Hanssen, junior Middle Blocker Baleigh Allen, and the MVP herself, senior Outside Hitter Sundara Chinn.

With the Belles winning the Lone Star Conference, Angelo State has secured an automatic bid to the NCAA D2 South Central Regional Tournament. Tournament play will begin on Thursday, December 5.
