SAN ANGELO, TX – The Angelo State Rams would ultimately finish as the victors in a hard fought nine-inning battle with the Rattlers of St. Mary's University. It would be a late comeback effort mounted in the sixth and seventh innings that would give the Rams their sixth win of the season as they move on to 6-2 on the year.
The Rattlers would strike first in the top of the second inning by scratching a two across the board by the way of a two run home run. Both teams would stay quiet at the plate until the top of the sixth when St. Mary's once again drove in two runners with a line drive to right center field. Now facing a 4-0 deficit and running out of plate appearances, the Rams needed to find an answer at the plate. That's exactly what they did.
Jordan Williams would give ASU their first base runner of the inning with a one out single to right field. Williams would then advance two bases with the help of a Josh Elvir single up the middle. Now with runners on first and third and one out, Lachlan Mayo would have the opportunity to drive in the first run of the game for the home team. The Sydney native was exactly who Angelo State fans would want to see at the plate as he hit at a .714 average and went 4-6 with runners in scoring position in the Rams last series against Texas A&M International. Mayo would answer the call lining a single into left center, scoring Williams from third and advancing Elvir to take his place. Nick Seginowich then ripped a double to deep left centerfield to drive in both Elvir and Mayo, tying the game at 4-4. Jackson Hardy then singled to right field to score Seginowich and give the Rams their first lead of the game
Nick Coffman was called to the mound to relieve Fabian Muniz in the top of the 7th inning and would hold the Rattlers scoreless through two his first two innings of work, allowing his lineup to give him an 8-4 lead as they would score three more runs in the bottom of the 7th.
The Rattlers would compete until the very end, bringing the game within one run but ultimately not being able to prevent Josh Barnett from earning his second save of the season.
Nick Coffman (1-0) ended up with 2.1 innings of work only giving up two hits and striking out four to earn his first win of the season. Fabian Muniz entered the game to relieve the starter Brandon Dusenberry and pitched for 3.1 innings and collected two strikeouts.
Jackson Hardy was 2-4 on the day with three RBIs and no errors in the field
Nick Seginowich led the Rams at the plate, having a perfect 4-4 day and driving in two runs.
Angelo State returns to the diamond on Friday, February 15th at 5 p.m. to take on the Lubbock Christian Chaparrals in a three game series.
