Weekend Roundup: Softball Sweeps Greyhounds and Moves forward to Face Rattlers

PORTALES, NM – The Angelo State Rambelles moved to 13-1 (3-0 in LSC play) and outscored the Greyhounds 32-6 during the last day of competition. ASU would take game one with a score of 13-4 and the second game 19-2.

Game 1

The Rambelles started off the first game of the day slow at the plate, as they would not put a run on the board until the top of the third inning. Ashlyn Lerma would get things going for the team as she drew a one out walk and then stole second. Courtney Barnhill would then start what would be a phenomenal day for herself at the plate bringing in Ashlyn Lerma from second with a single as ASU's first run of the game.

Neither team would have luck at the plate until ENMU struck in the bottom of the fifth, playing small ball to manufacture two runs and take the lead late in the game. Angelo State responded in the top of the sixth when Megan Gordon scored an unearned run from a ball put in play by Jade Strother that would go from the catcher, to the pitcher, to second base, then to first, before finally ending up in the hands of the shortstop who tagged Strother out, allowing Gordon to score.

Victoria Vasquez would hold the Greyhounds scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, and then the Rambelle lineup would explode for 11 runs in the top of the seventh. Eastern New Mexico would try to respond with their last at bat, but would fall short, ultimately dropping the first game of the day by nine runs.

Courtney Barnhill led the team at the plate, going 3-5 with five RBIs and drawing a walk as well.  Karina Rocha, Mykayla Stroud, and Maleya Burns would all have at least two hits in this game as well.

Meagan Hill and Victoria Vasquez both made appearances in the circle for the Rambelles. Hill got the call to start and went 4.1 innings, giving up six hits and two earned runs. Hill was consistent with her pitches, striking out three and walking none. Vasquez would then come in to finish the game in relief. In her 2.1 innings of work she would give up only four hits and two runs, neither of which were earned.

Game 2

Angelo State would waste no time getting on the board in the second game, blowing up the top of the first inning with eight runs to start the competition. Not relenting the Rambelles would then catch fire in the top of the second to add seven more runs to their lead, taking an assertive 15-0 lead in the top of the second inning. The third and fourth innings brought no relief for the Greyhounds as ASU would tack on three more runs in the third, and a final lone run in the top of the fourth making it 19-0. Eastern New Mexico would finally hold Angelo State scoreless in the top of the fifth, but the gap would prove to be too big to bridge as the Rambelles took home a 19-2 win from this game as well as a series sweep.

A number of Rambelles had astonishing performances at the plate in this game. Courtney Barnhill went a perfect 5-5 with four RBIs, four runs scored, two doubles, and a homerun.

Taegan Kirk was 3-4 with four RBIs and a homerun, as well as crossed the plate twice as a runner.

Taylor Fogle went 2-2 with an RBI and two runs, and Avery Zeigler was 1-1 with a home run as well.

Makayla Corbin went the full five innings in the circle for ASU, giving up only three hits and two runs while striking out two.

The Rambelles return to action soon against the St. Mary's Rattlers when they travel to San Antonio for double header action on Wednesday, February 20th.
