Rocha’s Grand Slam Powers #1 Rambelles to Split Against Rattlers

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Karina Rocha delivered the big blow in game two as her grand slam helped the #1 Angelo State University softball team to a split during non-conference regional action against St. Mary's on Wednesday. The Rattlers claimed the win in game one, 2-1, after the Rambelles nearly pulled off a rally in the seventh inning. Then in game two, Rocha's long ball broke open a close 1-0 game and led Angelo State to the 6-1 win.

In the first game, St. Mary's (9-6) plated a run in the third and fourth innings to jump out to the 2-0 lead. Still down two in the top of the seventh, Angelo State (14-2) got the offense going. Rocha singled with one out and Megan Gordon came on to pinch-run and quickly scored when Avery Zeigler tripled down the right field line on a 1-2 pitch to cut the deficit to one. Jade Strother then battled to a full-count and hit a fly ball out to right-center that was caught by the centerfielder to preserve the 2-1 win for the Rattlers.

Zeigler tallied two hits to lead the offense and drove in the only run. In the circle, Meagan Hill started and went the first 4.2 innings and ended up with the hard-luck loss (5-1) after allowing just two earned runs along with four strikeouts. Victoria Vasquez came on in relief and went the final 1.1 innings and didn't allow a baserunner, as she also added a strikeout.

Raynelle Nash, Staci Johns and Taylor Germain paced St. Mary's with two hits apiece, while both Johns and Abigale Carney drove in a run apiece. In the circle, Johns went all seven innings to pick-up the complete game win (6-2) after allowing one earned run on three hits. St. Mary's held a 7-3 edge in hits and committed the only error of the game.

The offense then broke out in game two, while Mykayla Corbin and Vasquez held the Rattlers to just one run. Teagan Kirk got the offense going in the third inning when she launched a full-count pitch over the left-center field fence for a solo shot and the 1-0 lead.

In the sixth, Courtney Barnhill opened the frame with a double to left-center on the first pitch. Kirk then hit the next pitch just out of the reach of the shortstop for a single to put runners at the corners. Following a steal of second by Kirk, Taylor Fogle walked to load the bases. It wouldn't take long for the Rambelles to cash in when Rocha cracked a 1-1 pitch to deep left field that went for a grand slam to push Angelo State out to the 5-0 lead.

The Rattlers got on the board in the home half of the sixth, but Vasquez came on to record a pair of strikeouts to leave it a 5-1 game. The Rambelles then added the final run of the game in the seventh. Hatty Shope led off with a walk and then stole second before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ashlyn Lerma. Barnhill cashed in the run when she roped a double to right field to move the Rambelles out to a 6-1 lead.

Vasquez then closed out the game and picked up the save when she worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to claim the victory.

Barnhill and Kirk led the offense with two hits apiece, while Rocha drove in four. In the circle, Corbin improved to 6-0 after working the first 5.1 innings and allowed just one earned run while striking out seven. Vasquez picked up her first save of the season after going the final 1.2 innings and posted three strikeouts without allowing a baserunner. Each team had five hits and neither team committed an error.

Five players tallied a hit for St. Mary's, while Germain drove in the only run. In the circle, Alex McLennan started and went the first five innings and ended up with the loss (1-1) after allowing five earned runs. Julia Cruz tossed the final two innings and allowed an earned run.

The Rambelles will host West Texas A&M this coming Friday and Saturday for a Lone Star Conference showdown at Mayer Field starting with a single game on Friday at 6 p.m. and then a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
