Lady Buffs Use Seventh Inning Rally to Slip Past #1 Rambelles

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Holding a 5-2 lead heading into the seventh inning, everything looked good for the #1 Angelo State University softball team when West Texas A&M rallied with eight runs in the seventh inning to take the 10-6 Lone Star Conference victory Friday at Mayer Field.

West Texas A&M (9-4, 4-0 LSC) opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning. Angelo State (14-3, 3-1 LSC) answered right back in the home half when Courtney Barnhill opened the frame with a single and later scored when Karina Rocha connected on a two-run homer to right for the 2-1 lead after one.

The Lady Buffs evened the score with a run in the second and the score would remain tied until the fifth when the Rambelles pushed back in front. Jade Strother opened the fifth in style when she hit a solo homer to center to give Angelo State the 3-2 lead.

In the sixth, Mykayla Stroud was hit-by-pitch and then scored when the next batter Avery Zeigler cracked a two-run shot over the left field fence to give the Rambelles a 5-2 lead after six.

The Lady Buffs didn't go away as the first three batters reached to start the seventh inning in front of Kylee Moore who hit a grand slam to move West Texas A&M out to the 6-5 lead. Four more runs ended up scoring to move the lead out to 10-5.

Down to their last at-bat, the Rambelles tried to fight back with Barnhill doubling to left-center and then scoring on an RBI single to center by Taylor Fogle to trim the deficit to four. Down to their last out, a pop up to shortstop ended the game and gave West Texas A&M the 10-6 win in the opener of the three-game series.

West Texas A&M held a slight 9-7 edge on hits and they committed the only error of the game. Barnhill and Fogle paced the Rambelles with two hits apiece, while Rocha and Zeigler each drove in two runs. In the circle, Makayla Corbin started and went the first six innings and allowed four earned runs, along with eight strikeouts. Victoria Vasquez came on in relief and ended up with the loss (3-2) after tossing one inning and allowing six earned runs with two strikeouts.

Kortney Coveney led the Lady Buffs with three hits and added two RBI, while Moore delivered the big hit with the grand slam for her four RBI. In the circle, Kyra Lair picked up the win (6-0) after tossing a complete game going all seven innings and allowing six earned runs.

Angelo State and West Texas A&M will continue their series with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
