Kingsville, TX – After coming into the last day of competition between the two teams with a 3-0 series lead, the Angelo State Rams dropped the final game of the series 14-5, but leave with the series win from a park that the Javelinas have historically defended well.
Kingsville found success in the bottom of the first inning by chaining together hits as well as benefiting from a wild pitch. The Javelinas would strand one runner aboard after scoring four runs on four hits and two Ram errors. Angelo State's lineup struggled going into the third innings, as only four hitters have made plate appearances in the first, and only three more saw the batter's box in the second. The Rams' sails would finally catch a little wind in the third as a two out rally starting with Nicholas Novak led to a three run inning, bringing TAMUK's lead to only one run. Riley Peterson was credited with the only RBIs of the rally as he drove a two run double down the left field line to plate Nick Seginowich and Jordan Williams.
After Michael Urquidi evened the game up at four runs a piece with an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning, the Javelinas would once again put up a crooked number of runs. After scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth, they would also score a single run in the bottom of the sixth to take another four run lead in the game. Michael Urquidi would continue his impressive day at the plate by legging out a triple in the top of the seventh which allowed Andrew Morales to bring him into score with a sacrifice fly to left field. Unfortunately for the rams, this would be the last run they scored in the game as Kingsville ran away with the game by scoring six more runs.
Urquidi reached base all four times he stepped up to the plate on the day, going 3-3 with a triple, a walk, and an RBI. The senior remains in the top 10 of five different offensive categories within the Lone Star Conference.
Jordan Williams, Nick Seginowich, Riley Peterson, Josh Elvir, and Parker Bramlett all collected a hit in the game as well, but the Rams struggled with stringing hits together in the second half of the game.
With the loss the Rams move to 18-5 on the season and Kingsville advances to 11-7. Angelo State continues to lead the conference in stolen bases, on base percentage, total hits, runs, and is second in team batting average. Although the team has struggled on the mound outside of a few impressive performances, they still remain second in the conference in ERA even after playing offensively powerful teams such as Colorado School of Mines and Lubbock Christian.
The Rams continue their road tour on Tuesday as they head to Austin to face the Hilltoppers of St. Edwards University at 2 p.m. for a single game showdown. They will then have a weekend off before heading to San Antonio on the 19th to take on St. Mary's in another single game matchup before finally coming home for a series to take on UTPB starting on the 22nd.
