Belles use big fourth quarter to defeat Westminster 76-61

CANYON – The Angelo State women's basketball team used a dominant fourth quarter performance to pull away from fifth seeded Westminster and win 76-61 Friday afternoon. With the win, the Belles move to 25-5 on the season and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season under the direction of head coach Renae Shippy.

The Belles were led by Dezirae Hampton, who posted an outstanding all around line with 20 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and five steals. She also made four three point field goals. She was joined in double figures by De'Anira Moore, Maria Delgado, and Marquita Daniels. Moore finished with 19 points and six rebounds while shooting 9-13 from the field. She also recorded two blocked shots. Delgado finished with a double double, recording 13 points and 14 rebounds while making two three pointers. Daniels finished with 11 points, nine rebounds, and five assists while shooting a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line.

Asia Davis was also a strong contributor on the afternoon, finishing with nine points and four rebounds while shooting 5-6 from the free throw line.

The game was closely contested for the majority of the time, with neither team having a lead of more than seven points through the first three quarters. In the fourth quarter, the Belles held Westminster to just seven total points while making key shots and free throws down the stretch.

For the game, the Belles shot 40 percent from the field and 79 percent on free throw while holding Westminster to 36 percent from the field and 67 percent from the free throw line.

The Belles will play again Saturday against the winner of the West Texas A&M-Eastern New Mexico matchup.
