SAN ANGELO, TX – The Angelo State Rams moved to 39-7 on the season (19-2) in the Lone Star Conference, after shutting out and run ruling the Texas A&M – Kingsville Javelinas in the first day of play for the final conference series.
The Rams were going to have their power limited in the matchup due to the wind blowing in and the Javelina pitching staff giving up the fewest home runs in the LSC. It was the consistency and timely execution by the Rams lineup that got the job done on the day. If the joke that, "we will win if we score more runs than our opponent," still stands, then Josh Barnett was an insult comic on the night. The hometown hurler shutout the Javelinas through all seven innings and gave up only five hits while striking out four. Barnett was also able to fight his way out of a bases loaded jam that kept the momentum on ASU's side. He collected his fifth win of the season for his effort, moving to a perfect 5-0.
Jacob Finke remains on fire at the plate. The Pearland senior went 3-3, drove in three runs, and crossed the plate twice as a runner. Josh Elvir was the other Ram with multiple RBI, going 2-4 while hitting in two runners and crossing the plate once himself. With Elvir's triple, he now has hit the second most in a season in ASU history with eight. He is right behind Lee Neumann's record of nine.
Jordan Williams also continues his showcase redshirt freshman year at the plate. Williams was 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored while making three plays in the field.
Games two and three of the series will be played on Saturday as a doubleheader starting at 4:00. Fans are encouraged to come out for the Grand Slam event put on by the CSRF graduate program. All proceeds from baked goods, silent auctions, and carnival games will benefit the Simpson Lifelong Learning and Leadership Scholarship Endowment.
