Andrade wins national title to highlight day one of NCAA Championships

KINGSVILLE – Decio Andrade's win in the men's hammer throw highlighted the day for Angelo State at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Andrade threw 67.67 meters (222-0) to win by over two and a half meters. The freshman from Portugal scored ten points for the Rams with the win.

"I thought we competed really well today," head coach Tom Dibbern said. "I think we're in position to do some really good things. Overall it was a pretty solid day."

The Rams and Rambelles are in good position in both the decathlon and the heptathlon. In the decathlon, Alexandros Spyridonidis leads after day one with 3942 points. His best event was the 100 meters, in which he ran 10.98 seconds. Trpimir Siroki is just 22 points behind Spyridonidis with 3920 points. His best event was the long jump; his distance of 7.50 meters (24-7.25) earned him 935 points. Harry Maslen is also in position to score points at the moment. He is in sixth place with a total of 3778 points. His best event was also the long jump and his jump of 7.39 meters (24-3) earned him 908 points. Dragan Pesic is in 13th place with a total of 3343 points. His best event was the 100 meters. His time of 11.63 seconds got him 725 points.

In the heptathlon. Karlea Duhon is in fifth with 2992 points. Her best event was the 100 meter hurdles, in which she ran 14.57 seconds and got 899 points. Jordan Nash is also in position to score points as she is in seventh place with a total of 2979 points. Her best event was also the 100 meter hurdles, in which she ran 14.31 seconds and scored 935 points.

Other final results include Trivett Jones' tenth place finish in the pole vault with a jump of 4.87 meters (15-11.75) and Sara Ramos' 19th place finish in the women's hammer throw with a distance of 49.97 meters (163-11). Jones' finish makes him a second team All-American. 

In the 4x100 meter relay, the men qualified for the finals in the seventh spot with a time of 40.91 seconds while the women missed out on the finals by one spot, finishing ninth with a time of 47.10 seconds, .03 seconds out of the finals. With their finish, the women earned second team All-American honors. 

On the individual side, Demontravous Jones finished tenth in the 400 meters with a time of 47.48 seconds, making him a second team All-American. Z'Antyler Foster-Hooks finished 13th in the 100 meters with a time of 10.45 seconds, also missing out on a spot in the finals by .02 seconds. Faith Roberson also finished 12th in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.24, missing out on the finals by about a second but earning second team All-American honors.

In the team standings, the Rams are tied for first with 10 points while the women are yet to score in the competition.

The teams will be in action again tomorrow.
