Rams Fall to Mavericks in Extra Inning Thriller

SA N ANGELO, TX – The Angelo State Rams and the Colorado Mesa Mavericks face each other in an 11-inning battle Friday night that ultimately ended in the Mavericks' favor. It was a pitcher's duel until the bitter end for the Rams who will act as the home team for the first game Saturday afternoon.

Trent Baker and Andrew Morris both came out of the bullpen gates firing, holding each other's teams scoreless through seven innings of work each. Baker's fastball ran up to velocities around the mid-90s, flashing 96 on the right field radar board once while sitting anywhere from 92-95. His ability to locate his breaking stuff as well gave him a lethal advantage over hitters as he fanned eight in his 7.1 innings on the bump while giving up only four hits and one walk. On the Mavericks' side, Morris gave up only two hits in an even seven innings, walked one, and struck out three.

Both teams were able to get relief from their bullpen when called upon; the Rams found theirs in the form of Fabian Muniz while the Mavericks went to their tried and true closer Will Dixon. Fabian was the only other Angelo State arm to enter the game and pitching the final three innings giving up one run on six hits. He walked three and struck out three as well. Dixon entered the game with a .55 ERA and hadn't given up a hit or run since April 28th and was tied for the nation lead in saves with 14. He would collect his second win of the season after giving up no runs and only two hits in the final four innings of the game.

As the game played out in the pitchers' favor, each team struggled to bring runners in to score as they each stranded nine. Although the Rams struck out only five times compared to the Mavericks' 11, Mesa outhit Angelo State 10-5. The game was ended in the 11th inning with a leadoff single, an error, and smallball execution from the Mavericks who walked the game off via a Johnny Carr single through the right side.

Michael Urquidi, Parker Bramlett, Nick Seginowich, Jordan Williams, and Jackson Hardy all collected a single hit in the game. Josh Elvir was intentionally walked twice and hit by a pitch. Elvir also stole two bases.

The Rams will fight to keep their season alive at 3:30 p.m. for the second game of the South Central Super Regional. If they win the first game, a second game will follow at 7 p.m.
