Belles Fall in Home Opener

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State University Belles soccer team fell in its home opener on Friday night to the Regis Rangers, 2-1. The Belles fall to 2-1 on the season.

In Case You Missed It:
  • Regis took an early 1-0 lead over the Belles off a corner kick in the sixth minute of the game.
  • Late in the second half, Gabby Villagrand took a 25-yard shot from the top right corner of the box to hit the back left corner of the net to tie the game, 1-1.
  • In the 82nd minute, Regis took the lead back, 2-1, off an Angelo State foul.
  • The Belles outshot the Rangers, 11-8.
Coach McCorkle's Thoughts:
I thought our girls made a good adjust after the first 15-20 minutes of the game to kind of adjust our marking because Regis was just moving players all over the field and so it was a little bit difficult and our girls were just chasing them in the beginning. Then we switched and started playing more of a zone type of defending in the midfield. In the second part of the first half, I thought we were creating chances and put ourselves in a good position to win the game.  In the second half, we get back out there, we were pushing and pushing and we start getting more shots and I think we just kind of rushed the end product trying to get a goal. You can see on the goal that we did score, it was not a rushed effort. Gabby just cut her and then just curled it around the goalkeeper's hands. It was a great goal. The second goal Regis scored, I mean that's on the referee. I think that for a college game, I think that contact was soft and I didn't think that was a penalty but that's just my biased opinion. At the end of the day, we had enough chances, I thought, to get a second goal and we just weren't good enough inside the 18. We will get better at that for Sunday and hopefully better set pieces because since Mines is going to emphasize set pieces a lot and hopefully we come away with a good result against a good team.

Key Players:
  • Villagrand notched the lone goal for the Belles and went 2-for-2 on shots.
  • Trenady Scott tallied four shots with two landing on goal, while Avery McNeme had three shots and two landing on target.
  • Kira Miller saw all the action in net for the Belles, registering three saves.
Up Next:
Angelo State returns to action on Sunday, hosting Colorado School of Mines. Kickoff is slated for noon.
