Rambelles Fall To No. 25 West Texas Buffs

CANYON, Texas – The Angelo State Belle basketball team faced off against longtime conference rival, the No. 25 West Texas A&M Buffs, who defeated the Belles 79-58 on their home court.
The Belles are now 8-5 overall, and 5-4 in conference.
 
In Case You Missed It:
First Quarter
  • A made three pointer from Lana Marov, assisted by Catara Samuel, started the game off for the Belles, tying the game, 3-3.
  • Two made three pointers from WT gives the Buffs the lead, 3-8, with 6:52 left in the first quarter.
  • A made jump shot from De'Anira Moore cut the Buffs lead to just six points, 5-11.
  • A two pointer from Sawyer Lloyd cut the Buffs lead down once again, 9-17.
  • The Buffs jumped ahead by 12 points on a made layup, but a made three pointer from Lloyd cut the Buffs lead back to the single digits, 12-21.
  • A made free throw from Megan Guadian brought the Belles within 12 points of the Buffs lead, 13-25.
Second Quarter
  • A made hook shot made by Moore started the second quarter off for Belles, cutting Wt's lead to 10, 15-25.
  • WT responded to Moore's jump shot and made three layups, keeping the Belles from scoring for almost two minutes.
  • A made free throw from Moore, along with two made jump shots from Samuel and Marov, cut WT's lead down to 10, 21-31.
  • WT responded with three made layups extended their lead to 16, but a made jump shot from Lloyd cut the Buffs lead 14, 23-37.
  • WT's defensive capabilities are shown as the Buffs keep ASU from scoring for almost three minutes, until a made three pointer from Lloyd brought the Belles to a 17 point deficit, 26-43.
  • A three pointer from Kinley Brown kept the Buffs from extending their lead past 17, 29-46.
Third Quarter
  • The Buffs started the third quarter hot, making two three pointers in less than a minute, but a made jump shot from Samuel on an opponent turnover cut the Buffs lead to 23, 31-54.
  • A three pointer made by Samuel cut the Buffs lead down to 22, 34-56.
  • Several made jump shots from WT brought their lead to 27, but a second chance layup from Samuel cut the lead back to 25, 38-63.
  • Two free throws from Moore and a three pointer from Lloyd cut the Buffs lead to 20, 43-63.
  • ASU's defensive capabilities kept the Buffs scoreless for over three minutes, until a made layup from WT brought their lead back to 20, 45-65.
Fourth Quarter
  • Two made free throws from Moore and a made three pointer from Samuel cut the Buffs lead to down to 18, 52-70 to start off the fourth quarter.
  • WT made several layups and free throws to extend their lead back to 24, 52-76.
  • Two made layups from Brown and Angelo Hayden cut the Buffs lead down to 20, 56-76.
  • A valiant comeback attempt from the Belles and a made layup from Brown cut the Buffs lead back down to 21, but unfortunately the Buffs skills and talent kept the Belles from being able to make a comeback run on the Buffs home court, as WT defeats the 58-79.
Key Players:
  • De'Anira Moore showed her offensive capabilities against the Buffs, scoring 15 points against West Texas A&M. Moore shot 3-11 from the field and 9-10 from the free throw line. Moore registered six total rebounds, one on offense and five on defense, along with three blocks and one steal.
  • Sawyer Lloyd showed her offensive prowess alongside fellow teammate Moore, scoring 15 points against WT as well. Lloyd shot 6-14 from the field and 3-6 from the three point line. Lloyd registered four total rebounds, one on offense and three on defense, as well as one steal.
  • Catara Samuel continues to show why she's a major player for the Belles, scoring 12 points for Angelo State. Samuel shot 5-17 from the field, and 2-5 from the three point line. Samuel also registered six rebounds, three on offense and three on defense, along with three assists.

The Belles travel to Portales, New Mexico to face the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds on their home court on Saturday, January 18. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
