Samuel Leads Rambelles To Victory Over SEU, 85-72

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State Belle basketball team returned home and defended their court as ASU defeated St. Edwards, 85-72.
The Belles are now 10-5 overall and 7-4 in conference.
 
In Case You Missed It:
First Quarter
  • Several made three point shots made by Catara Samuel and Sawyer Lloyd, along with a made layup from De'Anira Moore, brought the Belles to an early 8-2 lead in the first quarter.
  • St. Edwards brought the score within one point on a made jumper and a made three pointer, but another three pointer from Lloyd brought the Belles lead to three, 10-7.
  • Lloyd seemed to be on fire tonight as she made another three pointer, and with a made free throw from Angel Hayden, brought ASU's lead to seven, 17-7.
  • A free throw from Samuel, two layups from Hayden and Megan Guadian, and a made Guadian three pointer with two seconds left on the clock ended the first quarter for the Belles and brought their lead to seven, 20-13.
Second Quarter
  • Two made layups from Asia Davis, along with another layup from Samuel brought the Belles to an 11 point lead after an early made jump shot from St. Edwards cut the Belles lead to five early on in the second quarter, 26-15.
  • Lloyd kept her three point streak going as she made another three pointer, bringing the Belles lead to 14, 29-15.
  • Two made free throws from SEU cut Angelo States lead to 12, but a made jumper from Guadian brought the Belles back to a 14 point lead, 31-17.
  • Several made layups from Samuel and true freshman Kinley Brown extended the Belles lead even further to 17 points, 37-20.
  • St. Edwards attempted to make a comeback, making several made jump shots to cut the Belles lead down to 12, but a made jump shot from Hayden brought the Belles back up to a 14 point lead to end the quarter for the Belles, 39-25.
Third Quarter
  • A foul on St. Edwards early in the third quarter led to Samuel shooting and draining two free throws to grow the Belles lead back up to 12, 41-29.
  • A layup from Moore and a three pointer from Lana Marov brought the Belles to a 15 point early in the quarter, 46-31.
  • Lloyds free throws brought the Belles to a 16 point lead, but a made three pointer from the Hilltoppers cut the Belles lead by three, bringing the score to 48-35.
  • Moore and Davis were able to maintain the Belles 15 point lead over the Hilltoppers with two made layups, bringing the score to 52-37,
  • Angelo States defensive and offensive capabilities came alive after the five minute mark in the third quarter as the Belles went on an eight point run, extending their lead to 21 points, and kept the Hilltoppers from scoring for almost two straight minutes, 60-39.
  • St. Edwards would make several free throws and jump shots, but a three pointer from Brown and three made free throws from Hayden brought ASU to their highest lead of the night at 23, 66-43.
  • A made layup from Hayden ended the third quarter for the Belles, maintaining the Belles 23 point lead over St. Edwards, 68-45.
Fourth Quarter
  • Moore started the fourth quarter off for the Belles as Moore made several layups to bring the Belles to a 20 point lead over the Hilltoppers, 72-52.
  • The Belles hot streak finally snapped as Angelo State would go scoreless for a minute and a half as the Hilltoppers began their comeback, cutting the Belles lead down to 17, 73-56.
  • A made jumper from Davis brought the Belles back to a 19 point lead, but over the next minute and a half, St. Edwards scored nine points to cut down the Belles lead to 12, 75-63.
  • The Hilltoppers were able to cut the Belles lead from 20 points at the start of the quarter to eight points with three minutes left to go in the quarter, but a layup from Hayden and two free throws from Davis brought the Belles lead back into double digits at 12, 81-69.
  • Two free throws from Davis ended the fourth quarter and the game for the Belles as Angelo State defeated the St. Edwards Hilltoppers, 85-72.
 
Key Players:
  • Catara Samuel was Angelo States most versatile player tonight, scoring 16 points for the Belles. Samuel shot 44% from the field, 33% from the three point line, and 86% from the free throw line. Samuel registered 10 total rebounds, three on offense and seven on defense, along with three assists and two steals.
  • Angel Hayden scored 14 points for Angelo State, shooting 100% from the field, and 67% from the three point line. The junior transfer from Texas Tech registered six total rebounds, two on offense and four on defense, as well as one assist.
  • Sawyer Lloyd continues to show her offensive prowess on the basketball court for the Belles. Lloyd scored 13 points for Angelo State, shooting 67% from the field, 75% from the three point line, and 100% from the free throw line. Lloyd registered five total rebounds, one on offense and four on defense, as well as one assist.
